Issue with R9 290

So I have come across an issue I can't seem to find a solution to.

The problem: After running a game and closing it down the gpu remains at high load even though nothing is running. So the temps don't drop down and it sits at 57 deg C the entire time. This is my peak temp. The load on the gpu doesn't drop either so that stays at or around 900mhz where it should drop to +/- 300 mhz.

Now the only way to get this to drop down again is by rebooting the computer.

I have tried old driver revisions as well as the current 14.9 and the problem persisted on both the 14.4 and 14.9 drivers. I have still to try older versions but this is an issue that only recently came up and I have been running the 14.4 for some time now.

So any thoughts would be great that I can try to resolve this.

Specific games, or does it happen to just about every single game you've tried?
First off, check taskmgr to see if those games are actually closing.

Every game, From the likes of Planetside 2, WoW, Bioshock and so forth.

Are you confusing load with frequency? is the load at 90-100% or is it just the frequency that's sat at 900mhz? It won't scale down to 300mhz (2D clocks), unless it is truly idle. Things like web browsers prevent the GPU from going down to idle sometimes. Also if you have certain overclock settings enabled, it won't go down to 2D clocks either.

What is your GPU load (%) when you close a game?

What operation system do you use ? its update till last update?
What gpu you have ? msi, radeom, etc etc ?
Maybe you installed some additional software what do really don't need it ?

Load is between 0-10% when not in a game but the temps don't drop as if the gpu is under load.

As to the task manager, yeah the games are closing properly.

Right now the gpu is at 300mhz with 12 tabs open and netflix running. It's only after a game that the issue occurs.

Interesting point about the bitcoin, I only just tried using that recently...

Well that means it's not loading itself with the games after they close, and is barely being loaded at all. And it probably isn't a bitcoin virus, as that loads on boot up, and would sporadically load the GPU every 15 seconds on a consistent basis.

Tried using what? Bitcoin mining?

Yeah I did some bitcoin mining a few weeks ago, Will check my logs as to when this started as it may be about then.

Oh dear, check for remnants of mining clients, and run some kind of cleanup with your AV.

Thanks all running those scans now, And checking background for any programs that may be running that shouldn't.

Just finished building a new pc with 4 R9 290x's, Some impressive results in the benchmarks but no overclocking done until we get the right waterblocks...we got the wrong ones

using g1 sniper as mobo? for gaming or mining? gaming that will seriously bottleneck your quad 290x. i know cause i have the sniper 5. planning haswell-e early next year.

I use the g1 sniper for gaming, and nope that is a different PC, The quad r9 290x is on a different mobo and cpu. As you say not enough PCI-e lanes for quad 290x.
