Asrock extreme4 x99 smoking..

Main components were: Evga 1300 power supply, asrock extreme4 mob, 5820k, corsair 110i cpu cooler, g skill ripjaw memory, phantek pro case. No other components but fans installed. Was My 3rd custom build...

Phantek case had the reset leads labelled as "pled"(so I had 2 sets of pleds and no resets) so after 30 mins confusion/rereading manuals/googling and then tracing wires figured out the mistake and decided to try a boot to test.

Immediately on power on there was a "Pssshh" sound and a smell of burning plus white smoke (no visible fire) - powered off within a few seconds. Wondered what I had done wrong - pled lights plugged into reset should not cause burning! Looked for damage - no burn marks, no bulging capacitors in view - could not see anything wrong. Smoke smell seemed to come from around the cpu region but no obvious damage on the motherboard.

Then sigh realized I had made beginners mistake one and not plugged in the atx cpu power cable. Plugged that in, deep breath, powered on again and no more smoke and all seemed to work...

Put in an old graphics card - booted and again all was fine, ran for several hours and the PC seemed stable - tested as much functionality as I could - usbs all seems fine, sound, network... and the reset switch was working with the "pled" leads installed in reset (at least I got that right)

On vacation now and will come back to figure out next steps in 10 days but any advice would be appreciated!

1) was it my fault - is not plugging in the cpu cable enough reason for a burn
2) could the smoke be anything else but the motherboard
3) what would you suggest I do ?
- guess it's the mb and try and send it back
- stress the system -OCing the cpu and see if it's really stable

RMA the board it sounds like you toasted VRM phase
it will function just at reduced output possibly with no adverse effects but I would't take a chance on it smoke is never good ..
there seems to be a pattern here on PSU's without properly configured OCP combined with X99 = failure

I am sure they will RMA as soon as possible as they want reports saying their mobo's are "smoking" as what happened to asus deluxe but of course different scenarios.

like OneMoar said, it should work just fine but only limited output. Seems that "safety" functions were not really fully functional on x99 boards.

Planning to upgrade to X99 board next year. Glad that I didnt rush to get one last one. Hope this mobo manufacturers will fine tune their products to avoid this kind of things.

Considering there are literally thousands of people with X99 that have zero issues with their boards, I somehow doubt this is "a botch from intel". More than likely a simple QA issue at a factory somewhere.

Hundreds of PSUs and Motherboards from all sockets and manufacturers go poof every year, and yet nobody gets all up in their pants about some conspiracy that something is faulty by design. It's just because it's a big shiny expensive new platform, so everyone makes a tiny story spiral out of control.

nah there are way too many people with problems on x99. considering how many people actually bought it...
there was even some trouble b/w intel and asus and others saying intel hasnt properly disclosed information regarding socket pins and such.

I don't mean to be that guy, but some links would be useful. Lots of people have problems with hardware every day, not just on X99. I haven't seen any besides the two drama articles about VRMs going poof. It's only been an Asus board so far, and with this being an ASRock. Magically no Gigabytes and what not haven't horribly broken. I would not be so quick to blame intel's socket design, more the quality of the hardware from these manufacturers.

These boards are supposed to be tested in QA, so that these faults are diagnosed before they ship. Either it wasn't tested, or it was done in a lazy fashion. Intel don't make the caps, they don't design the entire boards or choose what parts to use. They give guidelines to the manufacturers, and they adapt them. Intel can't take full responsibility for this.

Cooked mosfet would be my guess and will be under a heat sink so you wont be able to see it, My old board cooked a mosfet but it still run with out a problem.

you might be right, maybe its just crappy boards... but that existed always.

Its up to manufacturer's responsibility to check their boards. and or equipment.

I think the board was broken to begin with. Forgetting to connect the CPU 8 pin shouldn't start a fire, it should just not turn on.

My Gigabyte X99-UD5 WiFi works perfectly, except for coil whine at idle and stock settings. Since I run it overclocked and under full load 24/7, the problem doesn't really affect me, and the board is completely stable otherwise.

Couldn't agree more. There was one also with an msi sli plus mobo as well but like you stayed earlier it's a minute situation and definitely a rarity.

To the other guy stating that x99 owners are having all sorts of issues...I'm not and I have quite a few friends here that have theirs working perfectly fine. I have seen countless others with issues on every platform. It's not x99 at all

The problems with X99 are not even related to the chipset there mostly Asmedia problems along with voltage related boot problems.

Just make sure you plug in the correct 6 or 8 pin cable in and not a PCI-Ex cable. Ive heard of people trying their board because of this and i almost did it once.

white smoke just means it was releasing excess dragon breath from the factory.

blue smoke is the techie god's lifeblood, that keeps all electronics running.

Once a board catches that kind of heat its not worth the fire hazard. Replace it asap. Just tell thrm it quit working. Record the pn and sn, revision off of it.

Computers run on smoke. It's like gasoline for them. If you let all the smoke out, it won't run anymore. Seeing as how you're already a little low on smoke, I'd RMA it. They'll refill it with smoke at the factory and resell it. Don't attempt to fill it with smoke yourself... It isn't user serviceable.
