Hey guys, I am having this problem where I cannot Restart or Shutdown unless I just do a hard shutdown. I refreshed my computer and slowly installed updates while creating restore points before installing. After the second set of updates everything seemed ok but after a few, the problem showed up again. I tried to do a System Restore but it fails because I cannot Restart to complete the process.

might need a complete format using Killdisk and getting all the drivers necessary for the motherboard, graphics card, soundcard, possibly a motherboard bios update

I am running 2 Samsung 840 EVOs in a RAID 0 config, I will try zeroing both drives and re-installing. How will I be able to recover from the problem again if I cannot do a System Restore?

do the 1st update pack only and do the individual updates after that, ensure you can restart/shutdown etc

So after installing the second pack of updates, the problem came back. So it has to be one of the updates in this pack that is causing this problem.

Something with the RAID or a USB device, if driver.

Anyway of doing individual updates? I agree with dave but perhaps its 1 update that just isnt compatible.

Software A lot.
Benchmark Scores Its fast. Enough.
The RAID driver may not be handing off the OK to terminate code back to the kernel.

Download and run autoruns from microsoft, as an administrator, and make a log file and post it here.

Normally when you restart to install updates, it goes to 30%, then needs to Restart and completes to 100% before going into the desktop.

I can try, but that will take a long time but might be worth a try.

How do I make a log file from Autoruns?

Go into your BIOS, and find the menu where Windows 8 features are located. There are options about booting. Look around for Fast Boot, and also look around for things that are named similarly to Fast Boot. Disable them, all of them. I had this exact issue, and it was the brand of the motherboard had taken it upon themselves to create their own "style" of fast boot. It boots without enabling various hardware until the last minute, this causes drivers to bug out slightly, stopping the machine from ever shutting down properly.

Once I disabled MSI's Ultra Fast Boot (tm) my system would then shut down properly without having to hard shutdown.

Also, follow this guide to turn off Fast Startup (aka Hybrid Shutdown (aka IT DOESNT TURN OFF GODDAMNIT))

Fast Boot yes, but is there any other strangely named booting option in the BIOS? Mine had one hidden away that only appeared when a certain option was enabled.

You can also enabled boot logging, then check the log file after the first boot to see which drivers have beef with you.

Hmm, I will dig around and see if there is another booting option. I have an Asus Maximus VI Hero. Would be weird if something in the BIOS is really causing this because I haven't touched it since I got the board less than a year ago.
