Samsung released a firmware update for its 840 EVO series SSDs, which addresses the issue of lower read-speeds with 'older' data on the drive. Version EXT0CB6Q can be downloaded and applied using Samsung SSD Magician software for Windows, on systems with drives running on SATA AHCI host interfaces. The company also published bootable disc images, which lets you patch the drive without an operating system. As always, backup your stuff before venturing out with SSD firmware updates. The TechReport took an updated 840 EVO drive for a quick spin, and found that the new firmware indeed improves read performance of older data on the drive. Get their findings at the source link.

Heard reports that the non evo 840's (which I have) have the same issue. Also read they have no intent on fixing the issue. Is this true?

They might fix it too if its reported. Course 840s might be phased out eventually for 850s

You read my mind. I doubt I will upgrade soon but I guess I'm not to worried if they don't. If worse comes to worse I would just fresh install if I had to.

It can take up to an hour to condition the drive, worth noting for those of us that will be applying the fix!

Thanks for that detail! I will apply it sooner or later, some files are not as fresh as before.

Haha funny!

Me too, Magician software is great generally, but it isn't showing new firmware available.

Maybe they are just testing it on a limited audience who read tech sites before they release on everyone. Gotta use the manual option I guess.

Magician software is great generally
The reason I am quoting you here is because I agree 100% on the generally remark. The only slight issue I have is when it is running and I try running a game at a non native resolution. Down sampling is a great example it will crash my game or not allow it to open up from the task bar. When I plug my 720 p tv into my card it also quips that the resolution is not supported by Magician. Why would the resolutions of t.v.s and games have anything to do with an ssd monitoring tool? If I close magician all is well.

Haha yep I get that too, its the weirdest thing ever. When you're installing windows and if you install magician before the video drivers magician refuses to work. very fussy with resolutions apparently. Don't know why.

Also every now and then on system boot, magician will throw an error that its not working properly but then it fixes itself. But yeh the functionality is awesome, they just gotta fix those minor bugs.

I managed to clone my raid array, wipe, update firmwarex2, rebuild and clone back; took all day through - even a totally empty just formatted drive took an hour or so - I'm not sure it takes any longer if there's data on there. Not sure why it needs to do it when there isn't, but the software won't allow you to bypass the restoration portion of the tool.

OK. I've done it on my 840Evo 1TB and it takes a looooooong time.

It just finished, I didn't time it accurately but it took a good couple of hours on a 1TB drive and the drive is about half full of data around 500GB's.

The firmware update was instant, quick reboot, then the restoration starts, it moves quickly to 80% then seems to get stuck but it is still working, stayed on 80% for 30 minutes, 81% for 30 minutes 82% for 30 minutes 83% for 30 minutes, then speeds up again to finish. I checked around the net and it seems to be normal for the process to slow around 80%, but its still working , just let it finish.

Its better if you don't do other stuff at the same time, I advise to plan ahead and start the process when you don't need the computer for a couple of hours. Make sure your computer isn't set to sleep.

Samsung says it will take "some time" but they should make it clear it will take a couple of hours on a 1TB drive, but I guess it depends how much data you have on the drive.
