Specifically I'm talking about the likes of Kingston KTH-XW4300 and KTD-8400C6. What makes them system specific? They don't use ECC or anything. Is it just that they've been tested with those specific systems, or are HP and Dell using some sort of checks? Can they be used on other systems? Can I mix those two in my HP?
The question arises because both kinds can usually be had for pretty cheap. I know at least HP machines can be sort of sensitive to memory (currently I have 3 x 1 GB sticks and 1 x 2GB and I had to juggle them between the slots to make it work); i've just assumed it's them being HP.
