Well... Some of you may know that I got this skt 2011 get up as a part exchange + cash from Moon Pig.

Everything was generally working ok until I had an issue with a faulty corsair PSU which had to be RMA'd.

Since ive had the system up and running again I couldnt help but notice that my system has started crashing again and it crashes in multiple ways....

Theres a USB issue where sometimes I boot up and it wont detect ANYTHING thats plugged in via USB and it doesnt matter if i switch keyboard to another USB socket - it wont be detected. This has happened quite a few times but it generally doesnt happen too often.

Sometimes my PC flips out if a certain USB device is plugged into a USB port via powered USB3 hub.

More often then not i have noticed the computer taking FOREVER to shutdown, eventually BSOD'ing and auto-restarting.

PC just crashed again not long ago and for some reason now, Its just taking forever to POST but the system works 'ok' when it gets into windows - i can game & do other stuff with no issues until it decides to randomly crash again which just happened while I was in a game of warframe....

So im here to a assess my options and get some advice......

Naturally Id like to keep this 3930k setup because its total beast but if i had to switch to a 1150 setup then i dont mind doing that either. but id have to make sure that the 3930k can be sold first.

I wont be going X99 as price of DDR4 is just crazy so my options are limited to getting another X79 or a new Z97 setup.

X79 motherboards are still ridiculously priced which half puts me off getting a new one.

I honestly dont know what to do here but its probably safe to say that the faulty PSU did some damage to the board.

If anyone else would like to offer their opinion about my issue they are most welcome.

Theres not that many X79 boards left on the market and it might be easier just contacting Cadaveca and see if hes got a few lying around that he might not want that he's will to sell for cheap.

Let me know what you guys think anyway.

::EDIT::

If i had to buy a X79 board, Im guessing a lot of you might suggest the X79 Sabertooth? My god that board is pricey....

Let me know which boards you recommend.

If your usb ports are goin out they all will. Id suggest RMA if possible or biting the bullet and getting a brand new mobo

Yeah, i dont think RMA will be possible - board is well over a year old. I dont have the original paperwork for it either.

I'm surprised that a Corsair PSU damaged your mobo. You'd think with the decent build quality of these units that the protection circuits would have prevented this, wouldn't you?

If the mobo is bad, then perhaps you can get another reasonably priced used one from a TPU member or eBay?

Asus goes by serial # and man. date - receipt isn't needed. That board should have a 3 yr warranty also.

I'll check in and see if Asus are willing to help. Otherwise i might as well buy a new board anyway - Id hate to be without a PC for the entire month while the one i have goes for RMA

pull the board and run it on the bench sounds like something is shorting or making intermittent contact
re-seating the proc can't hurt either

what makes you think the board is shorting somewhere? Ive had times where i dont have USB issues for weeks. Most days i can boot up with no issues... I will still reseat the board none the less.

For one thing, if a PSU is faulty ... it's faulty no matter the brand.

And it doesn't have to be the PSU, it can be ... well anything really.

That's what is happening to me. Once I hit my table harder or even slightly push the side panel on the case from the motherboards back side the pc restarts. Other than that it's running fine.

Yeah, I know, it's just a bit surprising if a decent one kills the board. Since the problems started straight after it failed, it's the most likely suspect.

Since I have the Deluxe version of your motherboard, let me see if I can help you out a bit. ASUS' P9X79 boards have extra USB 3.0 controllers in addition to the USB 2.0 controller on the PCH. It's very possible that a driver for either controller could be causing issues. The P9X79 set of boards also allows you to partially and fully initialize USB on boot. I would recommend disabling quick boot which will force full USB device detection.

I take it that you've re-installed Windows and the drivers for your board as well, right?

Edit: I should note that my machine started having AMD driver crashes because the paste on my primary 6870 dried up... so make sure to check everything, because it could be just that. :)

Well ive not completely reinstalled windows (waiting for my anti-virus to expire first!!) But ive been having intermittent issues with this board on both USB 3 & 2 ports for a while now and finding the latest ASmedia drivers is difficult as they dont have drivers on their website ready to download. Latest drivers for the USB 3 is 2013 and i was searching for a long long time before i found it on some french website.

Ive no idea why the crashing & freezing even happens.... For the time being im running my 3930k at 4.5Ghz just to see if its the OC thats crapping out - it seems OK so far but quite often this machine will work PERFECTLY for hours, days or weeks before it will just randomly start freezing/crashing at shutdown or during periods when im not doing anything with the PC at all.

Earlier today i was playing a little bit of warframe when the screen went black and the whole system just froze up. numlock & capslock could still be activated (LEDs light up when caps/num lock is active on this keyboard)

so far ive taken my OC down a notch, and re-seated my ram, double checking to make sure that it was installed correctly....

The ram problem could have been from an earlier issue where even though i had it running in quad channel one of the sticks of ram would just completely refuse to show up in the bios & windows until i gave it a wiggle.

Im at a complete loss.... I think my decision to run the faulty PSU while i waited for a replacement to arrive was pretty stupid one. the board kept on shorting out the system because of oversurge protection in the bios. So somewhere along the line damage was done somewhere but im not sure just where.

I got new ram coming in anyway, I will run memtest overnight and see if it picks anything up.

On a side note, i dont suffer from slow boot ups anymore

it really sounds like you need to re-seat the proc bad contract @ the socket will cause everything you mentioned particularly the bit about the ram not showing up

Even with the 2013 ones from ASUS' site, I haven't had an issue with them. I haven't been using USB 3.0 devices, but the 2.0 ones I've used work flawlessly so I wouldn't expect it to the a driver issue.
How are you overclocking your CPU? I do this thing where I'll use a negative CPU offset to lower idle voltages but I'll bump the boost voltage offset to make it go hard under load. What will sometimes happen is I will mispredict the lowest offset voltage on the core. So even if the boost voltage under load is stable, just the right amount of load at the right C or P state, and boom, BSOD. Not to say this is the same issue your having, but I've found that skt2011 will get temperamental if you don't adjust certain voltages in tandem.

I'm curious as to what your core, vccsa, and vtt voltages are. Also is your DRAM rated for 2133 or did you OC them to 2133?
Earlier today i was playing a little bit of warframe when the screen went black and the whole system just froze up. numlock & capslock could still be activated (LEDs light up when caps/num lock is active on this keyboard)
The num lock light was still on and it was stuck on? That's a sign of a kernel panic/hard crash in my experience.
The ram problem could have been from an earlier issue where even though i had it running in quad channel one of the sticks of ram would just completely refuse to show up in the bios & windows until i gave it a wiggle.
That's a pretty big thing. Is it the DIMM slot itself? A nice thorough visual inspection might be in order.
I got new ram coming in anyway, I will run memtest overnight and see if it picks anything up.
Issues should show up relatively quickly on MemTest86+ if it's memory or IMC related. Two passes should be sufficient to rule out the DRAM itself.

it really sounds like you need to re-seat the proc bad contract @ the socket will cause everything you mentioned particularly the bit about the ram not showing up

I dont think that its a CPU seating issue but i will do it when i get out of bed before work.

Even with the 2013 ones from ASUS' site, I haven't had an issue with them. I haven't been using USB 3.0 devices, but the 2.0 ones I've used work flawlessly so I wouldn't expect it to the a driver issue..

the ASmedia drivers on the asus website are old. I have the 2013 ones which are the 'latest' afaik

Also is your DRAM rated for 2133 or did you OC them to 2133?

the whole thing is based on an offset and the OC has been tested stable at different times for 8hrs+. I will tell you my voltages later but i think i bumped them a little above the default. my DRAM is 2133@XMP so not overclocked.

The num lock light was still on and it was stuck on? That's a sign of a kernel panic/hard crash in my experience.

numlock was still on but i could turn it on and off. Completely black screened, there was no looping of audio either like normally when you have a bad crash while in the middle of a film, music or a game.

That sounds suspiciously like the GPU locked up, it could be a GPU driver issue. If the CPU or memory had become unstable the kernel typically will panic and the num lock would become stuck.

Sounds like driver problems to me, might be damage to stuff related to faulty PSU. Needs fresh OS install and up-to-date drivers to properly diagnose, IMHO.

Well that's good news sorta. Hopefully its the memory. I was going to suggest the same as Dave. New parts all around just to conform its the board. That board should be tough enough to withstand failed PSU. Was it the AX860?

btw have you checked your board's heat
any chip that too hot or too cold
could be from controller or chipset, if it happens theres nutting you can do, RMA or buy new board

Completely off? Bad memory won't usually cause that to randomly happen. I would ensure the PSU is good because my friend's PSU just went and it was shutting off at random intervals. Come to find out the fan on the PSU is shot and it was probably overheating. I have a SeaSonic unit coming to replace it. The only other event that has completely shut off a computer for me is the CPU overheating over ΔTjMax.

You know what to do now. Pull out all of them DIMMs and test each DIMM one by one. If they all work individually, then you should test each DIMM slot one by one.

I can't get my 3930k stable above 4.4. It's solid at 4.4 but at 4.5 it's flaky. You sure you just don't have a bad CPU for over clocking, or your voltage is too low? I need 1.4 for stable 4.4.
