GTX 970 VERSION

I am going to buy a gtx 970, probably the gigabyte g1 gaming, still i would like to know yout thoughts!

there are 2 things im afraid of:

1- coil whining ive seen this problem like in so many threads, that im afraid to buy a gtx 970...

2- my chieftech modular PSU with 650W, I use a 4 pin connection on my current gpu wich is a amd radeon hd 6850, ive heard that the gtx 970 uses a 1- 6 pi connection and 1 8 pin connection..

what you guys think ?

Doesn't use the original PCB design all cards are using now but rather a design unique to a different brand or mfg. Say Gigabyte releases an S1 Sniper XXX with a new design with different power capabilities...or one that is meant for an ITX build so it's smaller than normal.

If you need more explanations, check out Google, Wikipedia and YouTube too...all have excellent resources that can explain far better than I can.

After reading reviews on the GTX 970 I chose the MSI GTX 970 Gaming card. Mine doesn't have coil whine but I have seen where quite a few people have. It's just a matter of luck it seems. You can RMA it if you get a bad one. It took 3 1/2 weeks for me to get mine but I highly recommend this card.

I think some boards have 6+6 while one or two have 6+8. If your PSU doesn't have two dedicated cables to fit the bill (whether 6+6 or 6+8) it needs an upgrade. Don't use one that says 650w without offering the most basic connectors. The gigabyte and MSI cards are the best.

You can get by with MOLEX to 6/8-pin PCI-e adapters, most cards ship with them because there are still many power supplies that can handle the work load, but don't have the correct connections. Though I would consider this a temporary solution for a few reasons...one is preferring the correct connections, newer PSU's are generally more efficient, and adding adapters makes clean wiring tough to do. There is also a risk of using an older PSU that has degraded over time and cannot provide its full power ratings any further.

If your card has a 6 and 8 pin connection, plan on filling those with power connections or don't get the card. If your PSU doesn't have the right connections, it's time to consider replacing it with a new unit, especially if it is below recommended wattage ratings. Keep to those simple rules and graphics cards upgrades will keep you gaming.

Be careful making ASSumptions when you don't fully understand the concept of the situation. Just because it's a couple years old, doesn't mean it's a good one or correct for your upgrade. It SHOULD be, but without specific model information, noone here can tell you any different about whether or not you will have issues. I have a 4-year old Corsair HX750, been excellent...and was built with dual cards in mind...never has been used for that as-long-as I've owned it, and probably never will. But it has 6 and 8 pin connectors, etc.

Also, just because a piece of hardware hasn't given you problems doesn't mean it won't after an upgrade if there are compatibility or work load issues. There are a few things to keep in mind when making an upgrade... there are simple rules you can follow as I suggested in my last post that will keep things easy enough to keep you gaming. I hope your PSU is a good model, and ready for your upgrade, and with that kind of cost and age, it probably is. But without knowing, all one can do is assume, and that does nobody any favors here, especially for you. So I suppose at this point, it's best to wait and see what you have before we can really recommend you moving forward with just purchasing a graphics card only.

Be careful with Gainward Phantom it reaches 80ºC though the manufacturer states that 80-82º are normal gaming temps.

If the MSI card has the Twin Frozr V cooler or the Gigabyte use's a Windforce cooler then it's pretty much a toss up. Just get the cheaper one, which should be MSI. If one is reference and the other one isn't then get the non reference card with the better cooler.
