Your specs say you already have one, but going off this...

... I'd say go the GTX 280. Just be aware the GTX 280 will use more power (if that is of concern of you, as your PSU will handle it).

This is obviously assuming that both are the same price, otherwise, if price is a factor, my answer would change.

What about them?
AMD stopped updating drivers for the HD 4000 series in October 2013 with its 13.9 release. Nvidia only discontinued driver support of the GTX 200 series in July 2014 with its 340.52 release. It's likely that the GTX 280 will have less bugs due to the newer drivers.

Do you have a choice because both are available? If that's not the case, and you are leaning toward the 280, go for the 285 instead. It ran a little cooler, and was a little more refined...kind of like Nvidia did replacing the 480 with the 580.

I would choose the GTX 280 between those two. If you can get a GTX 285 then that would be a little better. The 280 was on the 65nm process and the 285 was on the 55nm process so it was a little more efficient and Nvidia was able to bump up the clocks on the 285.

Thanks for that info! I couldn't remember exactly why it was faster and cooler! It's been awhile since I owned a 285.

Hi bro, go for 280. I had 4870 few years ago and it was crap. It was running hot and i could not overclock it even a bit without getting artifacts. I will never ever step again into AMD waters.....

My younger brother (he's too damn cheap to upgrade his free GPU) still runs the GTX 280 I gave him in his computer. He's been using it for the past 2 years now and I used it for about 2.5 years before that. He plays games fine with some tweaking on graphic settings at 1440x900 his monitor supports. We played Borderlands 2 the other night and Saints Row IV and he's content with the performance it gives him.

Certainly go with the 280 if that's what's availaible to you - one heck of a card.

Frankly both those cards are low range cards by today's standards, and not even sold in most places.

While I loved my 4870 for the 5 years it gave me service I suggest something more modern like the R9 270x.
