Depends on what clocks you are running, temps, and the voltage you push to do so.

This. I need 1.35-1.36v just to do 4.5GHZ on my chip with relatively decent stability, and im on a custom loop. I don't think temperatures are the limitation for my chip, which is why ive opted out of delidding.

I delidded my 4770k, and it was absolutely worth it. I say this because it crunches 24/7 and it shaved off about 15-18*C. I was about to delid the 4790 til I realized the cooler was mounted incorrectly , now it's fine.


All in all, I wouldn't bother unless you really want to... or are an avid cruncher

i may skip delid since im kinda worry it will affect the chip for long term

no not unless you are using a Full Custom Water Loop and a super duper motherboard AND running >1.25V

I swear it looks like it never really adds to the top end of overclocking. Lower temps are great, but they don't sell afterwards and there are plenty of great highend air and aio coolers.

@Vario and I had a lengthy discussion on this very topic. I won't speak for him but, overall I decided not to pursue mainly due to not really needing to push my clocks any higher. I get the urge sometimes but as stated before it all boils down to personal pref and/or curiosity. Very tempting but can hurt resale to.

I think that if you just play computer games and want that extra performance, look elsewhere because you aren't going to get any more frame rate from it. If you are only into benchmarks and setting new records on hwbot, its a useful thing to do.
Temperatures are much lower but the overclocks aren't that much better. I think voltage is a bigger problem then heat, and you might get some benefit from having lower temperatures requiring lower voltages, but overall you might get 200 mhz more clock, that doesn't really amount to any increase in frame rate.

I just upgraded to a i5 4690k with a kraken x61 aio cooler. I got a msi gaming 5 mobo.

As I was browsing overclocking guide for the i5 4690k, I found videos about DELIDDING the chip for better temps and more equal temps across the cores...

I'm gonna test my chip without DELIDDING it first and if I'm unsatisfied with my results I might consider the delidding option.

Just wanted to hear other people's opinions first

As I was browsing overclocking guide for the i5 4690k, I found videos about DELIDDING the chip for better temps and more equal temps across the cores...

I'm gonna test my chip without DELIDDING it first and if I'm unsatisfied with my results I might consider the delidding option.

Yes you should always try overclocking it before you delid. Bear in mind that delidding can kill the chip. I recommend using a vice + wood block + mallet to knock the heat spreader off rather than a razor blade, because the razor blade can nick the die or cut through the circuit board exposing traces. You can buy $5 Celeron 420 cpus on ebay with glued on heatspreaders, and these make good practice.

Also cadaveca had some info on delidding killing the IMCs a while back.

What ive come to realize is a lot of times people will use Prime95 or something to stress test the CPU, which will make more a lot of unnecessary heat, and no real world application will create that much stress or heat so they see those temps and they think delid. So ive resorted to using games, benchmarks, x264 benchmark in a loop (since I use my rig for video editting too) to test for stability. 2 loops of memtest for the memory. This way I didnt really need to delid since temps sit around 70c in the x264.

And my rig is stable enough for what I do so.
