So I will have my PC built maybe in 2 weeks. Does it still cost to join this beta?

Essentially you preorder the game and then pay extra for beta early access. So far I must say it has been a damn good experience.

Check YouTube vids and forums...see if its what you want to invest in. I'm glad I did but I spent a while researching before I invested. So far worth every penny.

Good. I've done far worst with $75

Bubble, I got Evo Merc much cheaper than $30, so if you've got the patience, just bide your time. The developer (singular, as in One Guy) is really responsive in the community, and they can really be a lot of help there.

QFT, it goes on sale all the time. And the creator and the game's community are second to none..I would compare their helpfulness to that of TPU and PC technology in that respect. And if you can't afford the Elite experience... EvoMerc will give it to you with an extra dose of reality in the physics department.

So I was on the Elite: Dangerous forums last night...mixing with exam prep review for my Server 2012R2 course. A person asked if they could run the game using thing integrated iGPU 4600 on their HP Envy... well I just happened to have an iGPU 4400 in my i4200U on my Dell 3540. So I set CCC to run Elite on Power Saver mode which runs the Intel GPU. I was no longer able to run the game at 1920x1080 smoothly at any setting. But I was able to enjoy smooth frames at EDIT: 1600x900 with Low settings (which still looked really good..like surprisingly really good for a "low" graphics setting in a game...) and was 95% smooth on medium settings. I reported back to the thread with those findings....and granted I did not play around with it for longer than 30 minutes because it was late and I had other things to do. But, yes, Elite Dangerous is playable with Intel's iGPU which means an AMD APU like in my old lady's Asus K55N laptop will fare quite well at medium resolutions like 1300x700 and 1600x900. And APU might even be able to pull off low at 1080.

This has me super impressed...beyond super impressed. But then, I am also happy and impressed I can run Elite maxed out at 1080 on my lappy using the AMD 8850M GPU...where I struggle a bit with SC at 1600x900 and Medium settings. I run EvoMerc in power saver at 1080 and it runs silky smooth always. But it is also the least graphically intensive of the three titles.

Long story short, if you want a space sim that can run well on light hardware, get EvoMerc, if you want something more flashy and less hardcore, get Elite. Best of both worlds? Get both! :D Best of 3 worlds? Get SC TOO! :rockout:

Could you clarify? I doubt you meant 1080p again. :p

Official release date dec 19. There are also two new videos up. One showing off the planet features and another giving out a plan for development after release.

Dose it have/will have offline singleplayer ? http://www.elitedangerous.com/about/ i dont see it mentioned here, thanks..
I remember seeing something about having offline single player but as of now it only has online single player.

From their Kickstarter, might be a bit outdated.

"The galaxy for Elite: Dangerous is a shared universe maintained by a central server. All of the meta data for the galaxy is shared between players. This includes the galaxy itself as well as transient information like economies. The aim here is that a player's actions will influence the development of the galaxy, without necessarily having to play multiplayer.

The other important aspect for us is that we can seed the galaxy with events, often these events will be triggered by player actions. With a living breathing galaxy players can discover new and interesting things long after they have started playing.

Update! The above is the intended single player experience. However it will be possible to have a single player game without connecting to the galaxy server. You won't get the features of the evolving galaxy (although we will investigate minimising those differences) and you probably won't be able to sync between server and non-server (again we'll investigate)."

I don't care if they push it back! I would rather they do that to keep testing than release a product that will have pissed off buyers because of bugs and glitches. The experience is damn good for a beta, but nowhere near gold territory imho.

Gotta agree... I wonder why they are pulling the date up.... Maybe the company is looking a little light on funds, and they need to get it on the market to start bringing in "retail" dollars.... I am seriously looking forward to the release, but I too, want a polished game, not a late beta. I didn't pay the extra for a beta, I want the finished product.

Not related to the game as such, but just an explanation as to why I wont get it.
It's got cursing. :p
I realize games are meant for the general public, but I would love to have games like these have maybe even an option for it to be off. The only dialog in this game (besides other real people) is text based right? They wouldn't need voice actors. *sigh* It's a pointless rant, but it's annoying that I couldn't consider this or SC safe for my little brother. I'd just like a nice, shiny, clean game. :|
/rant
Maybe I'll get SC once it's released in ~2018. I'll be in college. :p

I believe there is no cursing in EvoMerc, unless you're on MP and the chat feature in enabled...that is just something you can't avoid aside from a verbose filter (which it might have or Vice might be able to implement). EvoMerc is pretty darn clean man...check out the demo. Don't pass this one up...it has so much to offer...especially if you're willing to deal with the steep learning curve and become a pilot in the game...you'll feel a sense of accomplishment that Elite provides as well.

I don't recall any cursing in my time with Elite, but I may just as easily passed it by without notice too. Sorry to hear that might keep you from making the purchase now. But maybe in a couple of years, after the game is out, and whatever extra modules are released you will be able to pick up the total collector's edition for a sweet price and still get to enjoy this and SC to the max! I spent a little time running around this evening, and while I can do okay in combat, I still get straight rolled in warzones, low or high. Ran a few courier missions in the limited time I had, was a blast though. I'm getting much better with station landings, coming in hot and touching down right as I come to a stop. Have some gimballed lasers, and just working whatever angles I can to earn a living on the Frontier. Staying close to the starter systems for now...I ventured out too far once and then got my ass handed to me by a pirate interdiction.

Was a good fight though...I swear. :D

I am looking forward to playing more and maybe eventually grouping up with some friends to fly around and get into whatever trouble there is. I'm also looking forward to enjoying the beta and gamma stages and the completed title, whenever it releases! I like the term "late beta" @Ahhzz , that explains a good portion of released games over the past several years imho. :toast:

*sigh* welcome to broken promises....

On one hand, they promised it, and they're not keeping their promise (therefore people should be entitled to refunds, and faith will be lost). On the other hand, this isn't just another SimCity palaver. I can actually kind of see where they are coming from on this one. Unfortunately Braben has been extremely vocal in the past about "hur dur piracy", so I think a lot of people might mistake this move as action against illegal copies, when in actual fact, the galaxy requires a lot of processing power, and they don't want to hand over detailed server files that could be abused in other ways.

It's an odd one, and I myself don't know which side I'm on. The game looks great, but where do you draw the line on these things?

I don't think it's a bad thing.. It's grown bigger than just a pipe dream. I wouldn't want a game now in offline mode. I want it to auto update, tell me when my friends are playing, give me update information, etc.. It's hard to bake a cake with out breaking a few eggs.

I personally don't mind the online singleplayer part either. Still, I can see where other people feel a bit miffed about it though.

Yea, I can see where they would be disappointed over it, but to see what Elite has grown into they should understand. I just feel it's a little childish to say I want my money back.. It's kind of like, "I'll just take my toys and go home" to me. I don't even see online requirements hurting the MOD community.. Maybe 10 years ago, but not now, but I'm sure you agree buddy. :toast: Of course I don't believe everyone asking for their money back really wants their money back. It's just leverage at the end of the day. ;) If they win then I just believe it will hurt ED.

If I had a data cap I wouldn't like this decision.. Then again if I lived in an area where they had data caps, I'd move.

Ya I've been following this on the forums and even though I may never want a fully offline mode, if I'm out of the grasp of the Internet on my Laptop which still plays this game quite nicely...I would be frustrated that I wouldn't be able to.

I think they should have an offline mode still, even with a limited, oh say... 10,000 systems would be MORE than enough. I can understand the frustration, but at the same time really enjoy what this title has grown to become. I am not surprised, but with these server-centric titles.

I still enjoy the title, and will continue to do so...but it does make me feel a little leery to make it my mainstay with this. I mean the indie title Evochron Mercenary has seamless online/offline, planetary landings, etc... sure it has a static universe, but it's still freaking huge! If a single man with an indie title can make that happen, I would assume that FD can pull this off here...maybe not before launch, but I bet like UberEnt and Planetary Annihilation, there will be a post-release patch or DLC that adds that feature.

Even so, one thing I'm curious about, and my apologies if I missed this detail... how often is the universe updated for solo play? How often do you really need to connect while playing the game? I know you have to to login and launch, but what about after that? Is it checking every few minutes? Once an hour? Ever 30 seconds? I am sure it's pretty frequent, but I often wonder how much impact this will truly have in solo mode for those that have bandwidth caps.

For the universe and what they can implement in the future, this game has a bright hope and strong promise of being one of the most amazing space sims of this decade.

I know that the other, and bigger AAA title, Star Citizen seems to be really online in the same aspects at this point...but I imagine it'll end up in a similar limitation depending on how much they depend on user workstations to handle.

I for one am glad that FD didn't try to have our PC's handle the huge universe they plan to implement...it would be crippling to many systems and their data drives trashing to no end.

So no true offline, dissapointing...yes. End of the world, no. Brings exciting things to the table? Absolutely. Possibility of a detuned offline mode in the future, I would bet on it. Even if noone uses it, now that it's taken away...the kids are crying and want their sucker back that they never really had in the first place...in a sense. How disabled will offline mode truly be if ever released? How much more stress will your gaming PC's need to run an all offline Elite Dangerous? This topic brings up a lot of questions, and until we see more from FD, it's truly hard to understand if they are capable of dedicating the resources to creating an offline mode at this point anyways. I bet we'll get to find out, if not get the experience of offline mode and it's technical requirements in the future.

I am with 'Coon on this, kinda mixed feelings... I think most of what upsets me is that basically, it's requiring an online connection to play (effectively DRM) when they told us otherwise.... I hate being lied to, especially when their rep on the KS comments says that they have only recently come to a decision. Bullcrap. They didn't just show in a meeting last week and go "Hey, did you guys realize that we never are pushing that 40Gb of data to the gaming machines?? It's all staying on the server!! Hahahah!".

edit
Oh yeah, the whole point of me quoting Kursah, was to point out that I fully expect any machine capable of running Star Citizen to handle anything Elite could throw at it....
