WiFi chipset is a bit of a broad spectrum, perhaps we should narrow it down to 802.11n or AC. The chipset with best performance potential is the Quantenna hands down. Broadcom currently has the best AC chipset as I dont think any other vendors even have anything on the market.

Voted Realtek because they're the only ones I have ever had for years, so they're technically the "best performing" for me. LOL

The reason is... I have experienced good and bad from them all that I have had contact, or personal use, with.
Those would be Realtek, Atheros, Broadcom, Intel, and Marvel.
Usually, just driver problems that work themselves out when they are updated.
The best so far is Realtek in the EnGenius EUB1200AC Dual Band Wireless AC1200 USB3 Adapter... at approx. 40 to 45 feet(through 2 walls and a floor/ceiling), this adapter has no trouble getting 3 to 4 bars, no dropouts, and great speeds with low ping times (for a wifi dongle).
It and the Netgear R6300v2 work great together.

Atheros and Broadcomm are best from my experience.
