GTX 780 suffers a lot of TDRs on high end games.

Hi, I'm new here. Im using a Zotac GTX 780 AMP! edition and seems to be suffering TDRs on the following games:

Battlefield 4
Borderlands Pre Sequel
COD: Advanced Warfare

I have already read the following thread (and tweaked my registry for TDR delays):

http://www.techpowerup.com/forums/threads/bf4-causes-endless-tdrs.204645/page-2

So far, no luck. TDRs occur at 3-5 minute intervals, sometimes, seconds after a level loads.

I even borrowed an ATI 280x from a friend, it worked perfectly fine on my end, my GTX 780 though, still had TDRs on his.

I really need to help as this is a relatively new card (less than a month old) so before I RMA this beast I want to know if it is a hardware issue.

BTW my specs include:

Intel i5 4670
Zotac GTX 780 AMPI! Edition
Ballistix Sport 8gig ram
600w PSU
Windows 7 Ultimate x64

Some thoughts and help is appreciated!

If you haven't already done so, make your way backwards through the video drivers. Not all drivers will provide the same performance/results for every system setup.

I've had issues where drivers would cause my 2nd monitor to not be able to wake up from sleep - only solution was to reboot the computer - or times when updated drivers that offered improved performance for SLI caused problems with basic .wmv files and they wouldn't play or played very poorly. Or the fact that sometimes a driver update would cause games that ran fine to run like crap.

I'd suggest to give the last 3-4 WHQL drivers a try first (going from newest to oldest). You can use DDU (display driver uninstaller) to assist in making sure all Nvidia and ATI drivers are removed.

I'll try this but I dont have an SLI setup. I'll let you know what happens :)

Ok. So I tried downgrading decrements and still the TDR occurs. BTW, could hardware problems be the cause for these TDR's?

Hi, thanks!

So you only suffer low FPS, no TDRs? Can you specify which games?

Hi

Welcome to TPU

+1 neatfeatguy

Using 340.52-whql here with Gigabyte GTX 780 GHz without major issues; [Note: sync issues, low fps and poor scaling in SLi with 344.xx here at least with some DX11 games]

[as have *tested the Zotac GTX 780 AMP in another system with same result; *vga card dose look like the main suspect]

If you're still having issues it may be related to the GPU. Are you able to test the card in another computer?

Hi, thanks! So you only suffer low FPS, no TDRs? Can you specify which games?

"Low minimum fps" with 344.xx onward with clean install of Windows 8.1
Borderlands Pre sequel [dropping fps here and there with DSR enabled]
Far Cry 3 DX11[lag and low min fps] Ubi DRM dose not like UAC has a lot to do with this.
NFS Most Wanted 2012 DX11 [hitching resolved by disabling Origin in-game overlay]
NFS Rivals DX11 [dropping from 60fps min]
Alien Isolation [Frame Drops and some hitching]

(Note:
using plasma screen which requires 60fps min to stop screen/input lag)

Edit: assume have adjusted power options in windows and Nvidia Control Panel for max performance.

Tried it in another computer. Same thing with him. This is a nightmare. I guess I may have to RMA this. Anyone else wanna weigh in?

Edit: Apprently, theres a ton of people out there griping about advanced warfare crashing all the time:

I was also having issues in BL:TPS sometimes I would get Nvidia errors pasted onto a notepad.debug window and the game would crash...I can't remember the exact error. What I did was lower PHysx from Ultra to High and it stopped. This error could be completely separate from what you are talking about though.

Oh I tried fiddling around with that the PHYSX thing, Didn't stop it from crashing.

Update: Tried all the drivers available for my 780 card, still crashing. Am I missing something here? =/

Win8.1 problem, IMHO. I can have similar issues with 780 and 780 TI depending on title, only commonality is the OS. BF4 works fine for me with all cards and OS, though, so I chalked it up as problems with this OS and memory management with some titles. Not all titles crash, some simply post error and "reset" the VGA.

Ok this is weird. I was lurking around the forums in nvidia and found a solution to my dilemma: I reduced my GPU clock speed by 20MHz and voila, Advanced Warfare stop crashing for me.
I have yet to test this new revelation to other games, but for another time.

Anyone have thoughts on why this trick worked?

Some games and programs over the years have been very particular about overclocks of any kind, be it cpu or gpu. Drawing a blank for names right now though, LOL.

Hi

Drawing less power under load; test with other games while still in warranty.

Note: I see it that the vga card dose not function as specified by the manufacturer and warrants an RMA it may get worse over time due to degrading.

terrible recommendation

wait, op did you overclock the card higher then what they did from the factory for amp card? Or did you have to drop it 20, from what they set it too?

No sir. I was running them at stock settings. I haven't even begun overclocking it when it was already crashing like hell on other games.

Ok. So long follow up. I sent my card for potential RMA, they said that it worked perfectly fine with them. I ask their power supply: It was 700 watts. Mine was 600 watts.

I'm thinking the culprit here is PSU. But can a 600w PSU really be inadequate?

Let the TPU community know; What brand is the PSU? How old is the PSU?

Note: if the PSU is generic OEM; unbranded or poor brand have been known to cause issues

Other member of the TPU community will be able to assist further if provided with the requested information

600W base model, 600 Army Edition, or 600M?
They're all Andyson OEM (pretty bad IMO), only the 600M isn't actually officially certified (yet). They all have 50A on the single 12V rail however, so they're fully capable of operating normally. That being said, it wouldn't hurt buying a PSU from a better OEM. Could be the 12V rail is unstable and operating out of spec.

Your system doesn't even draw close to that, in fact it draw less than 500W's, so I wouldn't worry about the PSU unless the event is the 12V rail is being ham fisted.

EDIT: Can I confirm you haven't messed with regedit to fix your TDR's? It's really not so great in hindsight. OK you already have.

Ok. I prolly have a very bad Psu. What do you mean 600 army edition and 600M? Im sorry im not that well informed with PSUs. But, regardless, it should still be able to support all my devices right? I mean it is 600 watts.

My friend has 550W Psu and he suffers the exact same crashes I do, the guys back at Zotac said it was working perfectly fine with them and the card was tested 48 hours straight. Now what could we be doing wrong?
