Most of us on here know that gaming PCs deliver the ultimate gaming experience and have hardware specs which embarrass consoles, which is why I was surprised at how good console gaming can be.

Been round some mates houses lately, which gave me a chance to play two new AAA titles, CoD: Advanced Warfare on PS4 and xbone, Far Cry 4 on xbone and I was surprised at how well they played.

Despite the known technical limitations and the limited framerate (50Hz UK TV standard) the game experience on the consoles was pretty good. The graphics looked very nice and detailed and were smoothly animated with no dropped frames most of the time, plus the sound was good. Loading times weren't an issue either and I didn't notice any glitches in the short time I spent with them.

I struggled with the controllers and couldn't really control the game characters properly with it, unlike with the keyboard and mouse where I'm pretty good and will give many people a run for their money, but I suspect that practice and carefully adjusting the speed of the controls would cure most of that in time. Lag was inevitably higher though due to the limited framerate, which is a bit of an issue in a fast shooter.

Even running Super Mario on the Wii and Wii U which have the weakest hardware looked good and was great fun to play.

In short, the overall game experience on the consoles wasn't all that much worse than that of a PC on hardware costing a whole lot less and saddled with an integrated GPU.

Some advantages of consoles are:

- Just install and play. The game will usually run properly right out of the box. On the PC, I usually have to spend significant time at the start to make it run right and look right, sometimes having to faff around with configuration files for really stubborn problems. Graphics driver updates are often necessary too for AAA titles, although they're not too painful nowadays.

- Used console games tend to be more tradeable, negating some of the high prices for them. This market is completely unavailable on the Steam platform, the biggest and most significant one on the PC.

- The hardware is significantly cheaper than a decent gaming PC.

- Consoles can sport novel features such as integrated TV functionality and motion controllers.

Main disadvantage: some snobby "PC master race" gamers will call you a console peasant.

Note that I'm not going to switch to console gaming and am not pushing it over PC gaming. If you've got the money, time and some technical expertise, it will deliver a premium gaming experience unmatched by consoles. I just think it's worth comparing the two platforms fairly as there are significant advantages and disadvantages on both sides.

What do you think of the console gaming experience compared to the PC?

I've allowed voting in multiple bands in the poll, because the quality of the gaming experience will vary with the console model and the specific game being played.

very happy with my PS4 and Wii U.

the next Fallout i'm going to buy for PS4 because Bethesda games don't like to run past 60hz (spacetime continuum breaks) and I have a 120hz monitor lol

Outside of playing the copy of Shadow of Mordor I won in the WCG Contest last month, I do 100% of my gaming on my PS4. My STEAM library basically collects digital dust. Pop the disc in the Playstation and play- pretty efficient setup to play some games when time is at a premium (always).

I just don't do "controller gaming" anymore. Now I do have a 360 pad for my PC for driving in open world games(GTA and the like)My PS3 is just a media server, in fact I just bought another one as my release "Phat" finally died and I can't live without it for my TV and movies. IF the PS4 had any kind of proper media server setup I would probably buy one. Not for gaming tho

shopping is a better experience on console. Steam store really needs some work. consoles get more meaningful dashboard updates too.

Well, I haven't personally owned a console since the Atari 2600 but I have played games with my kids on a SNES and Nintendo 64. Both are great consoles with really fun family games. I like PC gaming because I get my games for $5 to $10 and imo a better experience from the games. Only drawbacks are that I have to wait a couple of years for price to plummet and to avoid spoilers. On the plus side I pay a fraction for the games and the games have been patched probably as much as they ever will be.

I remember when I used to be able to put in a disk/cartridge and just play a game. Consoles aren't consoles anymore, and they've taken half the fun out of them by trying to be something else. I put a disk in my console, and have to wait half an hour because there's an update I don't care about. If developers QA was decent, and they weren't forced to meet ridiculous deadlines, they wouldn't have to put out a day 1 1.5GB patch on consoles. I think since PS2/Xbox original, things have just gone downhill.

I'm hardcore PC now since I've built my rig, but my bro has a PS4 and I'm impressed by it. They run very well on their limit hardware. Maybe not be true 1080p HD, but you can't tell. I feel they are getting the most out the hardware. And 30 fps isnt's terribly noticeably if you have a decent tv with the upped refresh rates.

Benchmark Scores bench...mark? i do leave mark on bench sometime, to remember which one is the most comfortable. :o
well i sold my X360+the games i had since i spend more hours on PC than consoles, i just kept Halo4/Reach(collector ed.), Lost Odyssey, Bayonetta, Magna Carta II due to sentimental value ( well ... these are my fav' so i keep them)

tho lately my "console" is a nvidia Shield Tablet hooked on my TV it also replace my PSP (and damn PSP games with optimization in 1080p on a 32" are gorgeous) and Grid gaming experience is not bad, albeit the fact that i don't have a "Stream ready" (5ghz) router and a ping 25ms higher than "required"

Took a massive break from PC gaming during the Xbox/Xbox 360 era, but came back to PC. I don't play games as much as I used to and have no interest in console exclusive titles, so don't bother with them now. The only games I wish were on PC was the entire Halo trilogy (and newer), for the MP, and Red Dead Redemption; the rest I can give a miss. My Xbox(s) and Xbox 360s, and their ~15 and ~60 games respectively, just sit there collecting dust.

Going back to consoles now I keep feeling something is missing ... then I remember it is, 2/3rd of it is missing compared to 3x27" triple screen surround goodness :) I switched about a year ago, but only recently has my mouse aim started to become as good (compared to others) as my thumb stick aim was. It's taken a lot of practise but it's worth it, I'm loving mouse and keyboard now. PC is definitely much more complicated, I constantly run into performance issues. Most games run at high FPS, but I often get microstutter or tearing which is annoying compared to the ease of just plugging in a console. I hope once G-Sync becomes a bit more affordable and GPU's get a bit better a 1440p 27" surround setup with G-Sync will be an awesome setup.

I have a nice steering wheel setup (Fanatec CSR Elite) but currently feel a bit lost with racing games. Forza 4 on the xbox was amazing, great physics and handling feel and great car modding and setup. On the PC Assetto Corsa is rubbish in comparison, can't get the handling to give nice feedback so pretty much given up playing it and have my fingers crossed project cars will be a big improvement.

The last thing I played on a console is twisted metal and by console I mean PS2 slim. But if you have a big TV like a 32'' I presume it must be pretty fun. If I were to buy a console one day it would be a PS because that's what I got used to as a child (back then didn't even know Xbox existed).

Could've sworn this was another flamewar bait when I read the title :|

I haven't gotten myself any current gen console, but I owned at least one of the last 5 generations (including portables sans the vita/3ds). Hence, I don't really fall into a single camp, I just go with what serves best offering for what I have. Since PCs -in my eyes- nearly always turn out the best for that, I'm often found sitting in front of a KB/Mouse. The fact that I do more than just game is also a major reason for this preference.

I've always believed consoles appeal to others was in the package rather than the price. For me it was the feeling associated with the experience. Some games I like to play away from my desk, on an oversized (or undersized) screen, JRPGs and 2D fighters are the sort; others I can't even think of running them away from my KB/mouse, RTS and FPS for example.

My thoughts on the console experience? If one's primary (and only) preferred method of input is a gamepad, if one cares little for graphics and one's brain/eyes feel no issue with following 30FPS rates and isn't bother by the other non-hardware limitations of the platforms, then a console is probably 200% the worth of a PC for the said peasant one.

because Bethesda games don't like to run past 60hz (spacetime continuum breaks)
LOL!
Try emulating PS1 games at higher render FPS xD

I agree with this, but at the same time I can't justify buying a ps4 just yet. I am sure there will be an exclusive to pull me in, but right now everything I want is coming out on PC as well so no worries there. if rockstar screws me on next gen RDR (on pc) that may be the reason for getting a ps4 ;)

I don't play on consoles. I've bought them for my kids, who like them, but I never liked the controllers when compared to my keyboard and mouse setup. Their consoles do look good while they're playing them.

I just bought a 4K screen (to be delivered today) and I'm thinking about getting two more of them for my first ever three screen setup.

Not sure if my two (three if need be) R9-280X OC GPUs can power three of these screens properly, I guess I'll see soon enough.

So,....................I'm into PC gaming for the long haul, but I'm impressed with with the latest consoles too.

i had money to waste for a short time.. not anymore. i've learned from my mistakes ;)

Me too,.......had a lot of disposable cash when I worked Aerospace, now that I'm retired, hardy any to speak of.

I grew up playing on consoles, N64, Sega, Gamecube, Ps2. I do own a PS3 currently. (Also had a makeshift computer my dad built for me, which is how I ended up getting into building computers) WOO SINGLE CORE PROCESSORS AND VIDEO CARDS WITH 64MB of memory.

I am just not a fan of the controls from consoles. I feel very restricted with aiming and movement ability. Not to mention consoles can not swap parts in and out. To me, it just feels smoother to play on a PC, especially FPS shooters. Consoles are a bit to restrictive for my liking.

I like the idea of consoles, that you don't need to ask: can it run Crysis? or Farcry 4 or any of the games :)
last console I had was something I played original Mario on :) so I don't have a console now
I got used to PC as a gamer, you know keyboard, mouse, monitor. later I got 50" TV + controller.. and I like DMC, LOTR, Fighting games, so it could be anything pc or console for me, even so my pc is 7 years old and consoles can play the games I cant :( need investment in my pc more, than any console atm. scary thought :p

edit: fps shooters only with KB+Mouse, maybe lost planet was ok with controller

I won't answer this question because I don't have any next gen consoles but back in the day I was really happy with GameCube, PS2 and PSP

was never a big fan of console gaming but in the early days before i eventually made it to PC I had a gameboy, then a sega saturn then later on a PS1. The Saturn i won from a competition, the PS1 was something i got from trading away my saturn.
I never had that much pocket money so never had that many games for either consoles most of my games were from my aunt as birthday or christmas presents.

I played xbox/XB360 & PS2 & PS3 around my friends houses but while i did enjoy them for racing & beatem ups I couldnt get used to shooters using the controllers.

I did some PC gaming but my experience was limited to really shitty games that came with my PIII back in the day when it used to cost £2000-3000 for a complete pc package. I played the hell out of UT99 though as that was the only game my PC could run relatively well and i played that against bots cuz i didnt have broadband..... After that i got a job and things slowly improved, got broadband and built my own pc and entered the world of CoD

Hehe.. Consoles.. I'll stick to my PS2, GBA SP and DS Lite. I have a Wii somewhere but I have no clue where..

I prefer the older, nostalgic games on consoles and more modern games on PC. Why? Not sure.. Might be that after playing so much Fate in my child days lead me to thrive on PC gaming.

I've owned a PS2, X360 and a PS3 - enjoyed them very much, mostly because I didn't have the money for a gaming rig. The consoles have one great aspect - the game runs as it runs, nothing to tinker with. It sometimes breaks my hearth needing to lower some setting just so the game runs better. It's just sad to see what could have been.
I will buy a next-gen console sometime in the future, usually have waited at least two years after the launch.
