Should I buy the TalkTalk Super Router?
Here’s the kicker: you won’t have to. TalkTalk is supplying the Super Router free to all new users and plans to give all its existing fibre customers the router as a free upgrade in exchange for signing a new 18 month contract. The £124.99 price tag in this review comes from the value TalkTalk places on it, but it won’t ever be sold.

As such this makes rating the Super Router difficult. The adoption of the latest wireless standards means it is a vastly better router than its predecessor, but on its own the Super Router is nothing special. Its close range and line of sight wireless ac speeds stay in the same ball park as the two other 802.11ac routers ISPs supply (we still await Sky, Virgin and others to join the party) but its long range performance is woeful.

So should you get the Super Router? Of course. It is a substantial and free upgrade for TalkTalk users. But is it a good 802.11ac router in its own right? No, it is one of the worst we have tested and yet that still makes it better than all 802.11n ISP-supplied routers out there.
Verdict
TalkTalk has taken a giant leap forward with the Super Router, but that is set against its dreadful predecessor. It's free, which is great, but the BT Home Hub 5 still reins supreme among ISP supplied routers.

I don't recommend ISP supplied routers they are not very good. Lack of control+tied into modem+unstable as hell wireless=FAIL.

Hi I have decided to go for a new router and do away with the separate modem any suggestions as to which one is best, around about £60-£100 I used to favour Netgear.

Cisco small biz line or Asus with custom firmware. or roll your own untangle/pfsense box.
If you could import than an amped r20g would work as well.

Go for the 120/110 than or you can get the asus N66U or AC66U and load alternate firmware.

Orrrrrr you can find a ubiquity ERL or ER (edgerouter)

I do have an Netgear 4500v2 and it's good as a backup router, however alternate firmware support is lacking at best at the moment so if you can pick up a v1 at a decent price it would be nice.

I have converted my ISP supplied wifi-router-cablemodem to cablemodem only and linked it to a propper wifi-router supplied by myself.

Well I don't really recommend combo devices due to a single point of failure, ISP restrictions, ISP tampering, etc.

I would get an Arris or Netgear modem and then get a seperate router from my list I chosen.

I had a Asus RT-n56u that never gave me an issue, upgraded to the Netgear r7000 nighthawk and its been up for the last 30days without issue. Incredible speed and range for wireless, and I can say that it is/has outperformed my Asus router. The Asus router has custom firmware, but with the stability of the r7000, I dont see how you would need custom firmware, not to mention that any custom firmware for the netgear disables its HW acceleration.

I have the Netgear Nighthawk x6. It is pretty awesome, the signal is strong even two stories up.

I'm just worried it will scramble my brain if I aim all 6 antennas towards me...
