^ ive heard mixed opinions regarding the CX line of PSUs. most low/mid range builders i know avoid them

Well, ...couple of friends have been using the same Corsair's CX PSU for more than 3 years without problems,

As a rule of thumb for power supplies:
calculate what power you will need in the not too distant future,
add around 20% so the power supply is running in its most efficient range,
add whatever "fear factor" you have left,
buy the best quality you can afford that will supply the calculated power.

I have a couple friends that have them in their rigs (CX500 and CX430) and they have been solid and trouble free for 2+ years. I have been and will continue to recommend them to people trying to build on a budget.

Benchmark Scores Faster than yours... I'd bet on it. :)
The CX line isn't great. It isn't terrible either... plenty serviceable. But they are the 'worst' in the Corsair line.

I would say it's getting on in age but should be fine for now. I would replace within a year personally as it is safer with your new components.

I didn't mince my words. They are the worst in their line.

There isn't a 'beginner's' power supply either. What does that mean? You plug them all in the same...unless you, for some reason, think.modular is an 'advanced' power supply, lol. :)

The odd thing is, the 970, though WAY more powerful, requires quite a bit less power.

GTX 770
GeForce GTX 770 - 42A and a 600W PSU minimum

GTX970
GeForce GTX 970 - 28A and a 500W PSU minimum

Source: http://forum-en.msi.com/faq/article/power-requirements-for-graphics-cards
(Note this is recommended overall system power, not what the GPU itself draws)

Personally I think running lengthy gaming sessions with a PSU like that on that card is kinda risky, esp with some of today's very resource hungry games.

@EarthDog , dude... take a look please.. its not about what im supposed to think....
taken from corsair site:

"CX Series

CX Series PC power supplies are an excellent choice for basic system builds and desktop PC computer upgrades. CX Series PSUs are available in a variety of power configurations, and include features that are normally found only on premium power supplies."

Reference: http://www.corsair.com/en-us/psus/cx-series

they mostly feature is 80 plus bronze certification, CX series also have modular cable design, and most of them offers standard cables, not braided ones.. or sleeved ones…

As a matter of fact corsair specifies another line of PSU's VS series.. they also tell it’s the entry level of PUS's line…

taken from corsair site:

"VS Series

VS Series is the entry-level line of 240 Volt power supplies with high-end features. VS Series PSUs are a great choice if you’re building a home or office system with lower power demands, but you still demand the compatibility and reliability that Corsair is known for. "

Reference: http://www.corsair.com/en-us/psus/vs-series

As an advanced line they also specify another complete line of 80 PLUS® Platinum, that its an advanced feature for a PSU, at least for me a normal PC wont need this level of Efficiency …fully modular cable desing, performance fan for heat….

taken from corsair site:http://www.corsair.com/en-us/psus/ax-series

"AX Series

The Corsair AX Series is our flagship line of power supplies, designed for use in truly remarkable PCs. AX Series Digital ATX PSUs are the first desktop PC power supplies with DSP control for amazing efficiency without compromising electrical performance, while the AX Series PSUs are our very best analog power supply.

80 PLUS Platinum certification guarantees more than 90% efficiency and silent operation at typical loads, and the world-class voltage regulation allows for better overclocking headroom. The fully modular cable set allows for easy installation and customization in virtually any PC."

I took when you said "beginner" and "simple" for people who haven't built or new to pc's or easier to plug in or something... Hence why I said 'they all plug in the same way'...in reference to the mechanics of using it and not towards the level of pc built (entry level to high end) as you described above. ;)

I took it too literally.

I am not sure why anyone would want a less efficient, less stable PSU. That would be the wrong place to save $$ IMHO.
It seems "entry" and "basic" is marketing speak for cheap, as in "don't game or do mission critical stuff" with it.

Game and mission critical are two completely different things though. ;)

Their low end reviews just fine. They are all well within spec and do well for budget builds. Most enthusiasts don't need the cleanest of the clean ripple for example. Return rates aren't dramatically different either. There is nothing wrong with a teir 2 psu for the majority of uses. :)

Hehe, you are right mission critical could probably get by with a tier 2 PSU.
