hi guys.
I recently got a hard drive for my aging machine (a 2TB Seagate ST2000DM001-1ER164).

it worked perfectly initially, downloading and installing 620GB of steam games in one day.

however, upon starting up today, the hard drive seems to be having issues.

but here is where it gets strange. it shows in the bios, but flags an error during boot, "port 4: device error". this occurs whichever port it is connected to, within windows it shows as uninitialized and attempting initialization I am greeted with "I/O device error". yet connected to another machine - and even older dell 530s sff pc - it works 100% perfectly, still having the same files on it.

really I don't want to replace the computer if its not that, but to me it seems that its the only possible explaination, but then how do the other hard drives and the ssd still work perfectly?

this has me really stumped and I hope that somebody can help with this.

This is what confuses me.

Different ports on the same PC result in the same error according to post, but another PC works absolutely fine, all of the files are intact and correctly sized.

different cable?
I tried different cables on both computers, works fine on the dell but doesn't on my Asus p5qe

EDIT: a third machine shows 'smart command failure during boot', and exhibits the same behaviours as my Asus p5qe based system.

The mystery now is why does one system show no errors and work perfectly?
