You'll want to try FC3 too if you like this one. The original by CryTek is pretty good too, and has tons of user made missions as well. Even FC2 is worth playing, but the story and some of the gameplay mechanics are a bit weak.

Any one with an AMD card tried limiting tessellation in the control panel to see if you get better performance with god rays turned on?

Just saw the [H] review of the game and they mentioned that god rays are done with tessellation. There was a large performance hit on the AMD cards with it turned on and kind of wondering if they're doing something similar to what happened in Crysis 2 (?) with the excessive use of tessellation.

My Farcry 4 hasn't gone gold...Until 1.04 it tended to go all black and windowed.

This is true, especially about FC2. The story is weak sauce, game play is incredibly repetitive, mechanics are very eh, game is super frustrating.

However, I hate to admit it, but I have found myself going back to play it in parts here and there and actually having a little bit of fun.

Still have yet to buy this game, to occupied with BF4, Crysis 3, Archeage, DA:I, GW2.

Will have to pick it up eventually.... But that hitching mentioned in previous posts would annoy me so hard... maybe even to the point of not playing it.

I'll give it a try on my 7970, could use anything that helps anyway.

The ony cvar mentioning tessellation is "TreeTessellationLevel", and mine is currently set to 1. Nvidia's GeForce guide for the game indicates Godrays do use tesselation, but so does Tree Relief for bark detail in the tree trunks.

The only way to force a change with the CCC control panel is to override any tesselation the application uses, meaning dropping tessellation detail for godrays could in turn drop it for tree trunks as well.

...Results

OK, tried picking a main stretch of road to run down from the monastery heading south. I ran a 1 min Fraps bench at the default 64x tesselation, then at 32x.

The results were so close I can't say for sure if it made any performance difference, because Fraps FPS benches always vary slightly. There was still just as much hitching though, and in exactly the same spots.

Tessellation @ 64x
Min-28/Max-54/Ave-47.350

Tesselation @ 32x
Min-31/Max-55/Ave-47.5

Since as mentioned there's not enough FPS difference to even call it a gain, and the hitching is always the main performance problem vs the FPS, I don't see doing this as beneficial. I also feel dropping it to 16x would be so low you may as well disable it.

DX11 Tesselation still seems to be an all or nothing thing regarding performance. If it's on at all you get an impact, and varying it doesn't seem to make much if any difference. Hopefully Dx12 Tessellation will be better optimized.

I took a screenshot of some tree bark at 32x tessellation, and could have commenced to show how it looks at 64x, but I really don't see the point given that cutting it in half seems to yield no perceptible performance gain.

So what's the verdict of those running AMD cards? I've been taking a gander at some reviews, and they say AMD cards run terribly even on 14.11.2.

If so, I want to hold off before getting the game. If it's better now, then I'll consider buying now.

Thanks

Lots of games lately have hitching issues on AMD, and it's not just a frame rate thing. It's got me wanting to go back to Nvidia and even if the 300 series is powerful, I don't see AMD even talking about unified memory, or their equivalent of NVLink. Plus AMD's not doing so good on drivers lately. There's even some games that don't work very well on Mantle, like Thief.

I'm definitely leaning toward Pascal, just don't know how well this 7970 will fare until then. I might have to hold off playing a few games until 2016. I'm surprised I even bit on Unity.

Thing is Nvidia aren't doing much better with this game, both teams have issues. I just tried the Rendered Frames trick set to 1 it helps a bit. Still stuttering along when moving quickly tho.I Ubi better be busy working on the next patch is all I have to say. I wonder if FC4 is popular enough for us to the Free stuff they are giving AC Unity buyers.

If you haven't tried it yet, the DisableLoadingMipmaps tweak helps way more than that for stutter.

The games been a none issue for me still, i have seen hitching as they call it but i played it over 30 hours now and i can count the times on one hand. Although you run CF so i don't know how well that will work out for you.

And every thing is not overclocked from there defaults.

Pretty much this after the first three days of patches.
You can now completely kill the publisher intro videos, as well as the new game intro videos thanks to a patch.

One issue remains. Turning mouse acceleration off does not in fact turn mouse acceleration off. It's irritating, but workable.

Normally disabling mipmaps would make a huge difference. Like in Crysis 1, the stones on the ground would look flat vs 3 dimensional without it. I've heard a few say it makes a noticeable difference in FC4, but I've yet to find where. I've taken closeups of stone walls, I've looked at stone masonry on the ground, and I just don't see it. Granted Crysis 1 came out before Dx11 Tesselation though, so without it back then it was really noticeable big time.

Also, it's not been my experience that setting max buffered frames to 1 helps more than disabling mipmaps. I've seen a lot of claims with that setting, including one guy with an older 2GB 600 series card claiming setting it to 5 was best, which makes no sense whatsoever with such little VRAM.

@RCoon,
Yeah turning off mouse accel doesn't fully turn it off, but you can tweak that in the GamerProfile.xml too.

Here's a good site for all the tweaks. http://www.dsogaming.com/pc-performance-analyses/far-cry-4-pc-performance-analysis/

(EDITED)
After playing some more, I seem to have run into a possible glitch.

After completing the "Shoot the Messenger" mission, a prompt comes up saying a new Yogi and Reggie mission is available. I go to their tent where there's now a Y icon, but it won't interact.

I've seen one other person verify this, but I've read of no solution. I tried exiting the game and trying it again, but same outcome. The only other thing I can think of is to advance time and try it at night.

Sorry to double post but had to bump to ask if anyone playing Far Cry 4 has leveled to rank 10 in the Arena to unlock the Bushmaster?

It was quite frustrating at first for me, but once I got the hang of it, it was a very enjoyable and suspenseful experience. I'm on my 2nd play through on Normal, and feeling a bit impatient at the start. The main things that annoyed me was not having fast moving crouch ("Non Stop" skill) or fast reloads ("Ammo Wrangler" skill).

I did my usual hunting to craft bigger bags, this time avoiding the freebie Sandman and Elephant Gun my Gold Edition provides. It feels more immersive if you have to use stealth via the bow, and brute force via getting creative, like hunting Rhinos with conventional weapons and grenades and Molotovs atop a rock, or luring them to a firing range or machine gun nest.

I then liberated two outposts undetected to unlock the Soft Landing skill, and ground out some Mani Wheel searching and got enough Karma to unlock Non Stop, but was not seeing a Longinus mission appear to unlock Ammo Wrangler. So rather than continue with my bow, AK, Skorpion and M79 for the next phase of my tactics, clearing towers and outposts, I decided to go for a better backup weapon in the case of being detected.

This meant of course the aforementioned Arena rank 10 grind to get the Bushmaster. I was a bit ahead of myself. I'd only thus far unlocked Lvl 2 Health skills, for a total of 4 health bars, Running Reload, At the Ready (fast aim and weapon switch), and Non Stop (fast crouch). I hadn't unlocked any Healing skills, so syringes thrown down by spectators would not heal me a full 4 bars, and manual healing was VERY slow, one bar at a time. And of course as mentioned I was still on slow reloads without Ammo Wrangler, and that in itself can create suspenseful moments in the Arena.

I had no Death from Above or Below skills, or ANY special takedown skills for that matter, so I had to rely on sneak takedowns from behind or desperate last gasp frontal melees. To make matters worse, the A2000 starting weapon you get in the latter rankings, where the format goes from a 3 round battle to 4, the A2000 would often have a weird delay when aiming down the sights, vs the quick snap I was supposed to get with At the Ready.

I also had no special syringe skills at all, but that's something I tend to avoid in Far Cry 3 and 4 anyway. I just don't like magical syringes. I'd rather stick to the healing ones. I also prefer handling problems head on as they happen, vs taking time to dig into a syringe menu and play doctor drug addict. The silliness of Yogi and Reggie is bad enough.

In the actual Arena though, the best part for me was fast crouch circumnavigating the perimeter of the upper deck, while looking for unsuspecting combatants that I could kill and loot, along with stalking the final one or two searching for me on the lower deck. The real treat comes when you have to run n slide for cover after leap frogging kills, or desperately survive a wave of animals, or cunningly stave off a wave of heavies.

Arena has pretty much everything but the jungle itself. I'm glad I ground through it because now every time I use my Bushmaster, I'll know I earned it. It was worth it to go through the initial frustration to gain an appreciation for the AI, hone my skills, and feel more immersed in the game. I highly recommend it. It made me slow down and pace myself a bit and appreciate the game's challenges more.

BTW, the Arena Mode I played was Battles, which is definitely THE best for playing with few skills and/or suspense, as there's more potential for stealth. Endless is of course more head on where you're surviving waves indefinitely. Weapon Challenges requires a 3 out of 5 star score to win, so could be frustrating and take longer with few skills unlocked.

I just want to try MP, and I can't find any players/servers (got legit game). Is this a bug or something on my side? Of course I am not expecting the bomb here, but at least try it once....

I don't know, I don't play mp anymore and I don't recall anyone complaining of player attrition in online play. Then again, it could be directly related to the many complaints of crashes and stutter many are having. That in itself can tend to somewhat thwart participation.

I suggest you ask a question like that on Ubi's official Far Cry forum. If you don't get one of the staff answering you, a member may be able to enlighten you. And if it IS more attrition vs technical, you might pick up some willing participants there.

Thank you Maniac. That is possible, but no one at all in MP? I mean no one at all during 2 weeks?

Maybe having used the warez copy before buying the game facked up my firewall settings? (Nfo said disable firewall for farcry4, I erased that rule later). But I still can sync my saves to UBi, Uplay, shop, etc. Just no MP games EVER!

Your having said that makes user error very possible and even likely, and is not exactly a good topic for most forums due to talk of game piracy being against their rules.

You'd be banned pronto for saying that on most official game forums. I feel I've stepped in horse poo here, and all I was hoping to do was get someone interested in discussing Far Cry 4 Arena play.

Bows are dam powerful as hell in FC4, glad to hear you finally enjoying the game, i been xbow M79 ( wifes loves that me to for death from above :p ). And been loads of fun screwing around with the ai playing games with them see if they can find me while taking them out one by one.

And get even more fun when they start firing mortars at you lmao.

As for the Arena not really bothered with it but though quest and item reason(s) had some fun with it, even more so when i found out those clouds of smoke on the floor are items dropped for you. Once was running around with just a throwing knife and a bear and a rhino and got lucky with a barrel and them lined up lol.
