Alienware 13 or Macbook air 13?

I am looking to replace my 7yrs old macbook. I have narrowed it down to either one of these above. It will be my portable workstation. Any ideas guys?

OK I am looking to spend no more than 1000 dollars. My main use for this machine will be:

reading journels,
paper typing and editing
data sets analysis with excel
and occasionally some genomic data alignment. CPU intense.
Causal gaming---at least I can play TF2
Good battery.

I am trying to get some deal over black friday,

Apple is also offering $100 (gift card) discount for macbook air. So I am thinking of which to get.

For what you want to do, you can cut your budget in half for a laptop. Definite no to the Alienware, unless you want the pretty plastic and lighting. Unless you have an overwhelming need to use Apple's OS, no to the Mac as well.

If you have a 1000 dollars to spend on a laptop then I would get something close to that so it will last you. Since, you do play TF2 and light gaming I would suggest this ASUS ROG laptop. It has a 4710HQ i7 and an Nvidia 850m and 12gb's of ram and it has a full keyboard. The one @MxPhenom 216 suggested is a good deal, but the keyboard would be a deal breaker for me, but if you can get over that, then it's a pretty decent deal. I just like my number pad..

That is definitely solid as well. Some of Lenovo's gaming ones are really nice too.

I usually look for sleek and slim laptops now whenever I look at them (The newer ASUS ROG laptops are much nicer in that regard. Not nearly as much of a boat anchor).

But these "Gaming" orientated laptops might be still more costly then is necessary. TF2 and other games with similar low requirements don't need much.

Yea, I was looking at that one as well. I like them both he can't go wrong with either. :toast:

I opted for the rog, because like you said it's only TF2. The rog has the faster processor and 12gb's of ram and a little cheaper, but the processor is only 100mhz faster and you can always add more ram. So, yea I'd get that Lenovo over the two, because of the 860m. :toast:
