I'm tired of sending back cards to end up with a so called refurbished card that someone else sent in.

And trust me they're going to hear about it and I'm just going to tell them to issue me a brand new card and if not gimme back my money and btw you can have your other one back too. I'm not going to be ever buying an MSI of anything labled msi ever again.

Wishful thinking, email was sent today to ask what my options are and what there options are. I just told them I'm tired of dealing with this RMA crap. I'm sure flag I keep all my screen shots and take lots of photos of things to cover my own ass.

Will see what he says tomorrow and will let ya know what they plan to do..

He's working for ECS now and we need to wish him the very best over there.

I got a response from MSI yesterday and again today. James from MSI Canada did the RMA for me so I don't need to do a thing. Also he's sending me return shipping labels out and offered me the MSI gaming 4G 290X so that's a nice gesture from MSI.

I think I ate my words back on not buying MSI again but with an upgrade like that I think they're going to have my business after all :)

Thanks MSI :)

V1 card with stock bios. The refrence MSI bios that was suggested gave me heat issues. ASIC of 82.6. So cant use V3 bios on V1 card? i have been requesting new bios from the msi forum for months, with no success.

V3 bios? There's just 2 versions of these cards as far as I know. V1 has the power plugs up side down and needs a small tool to push the clip to remove the cables. V 2 they corrected the power plugs and the bios won't work on a v1 card as the power circuit is different. Do yourself a favor and remove the 6 screws that holds the cooler on and re paste the chip with MX-4

I'll update tomorrow if Gelid extreme works better then mx-4... I got myself a brand new tube sitting here waiting to be used.. The paste MSI use is junk and dries up quick. Go look on the last page or 2 in the R9 290- 290x owners thread, I posted pic's of a brand new 290x and the paste was already dried in spots.

i would check to see if the screws are even tight before bothering to remove it.

of the few people with msi gamers i have spoken too all have found they was loose to some degree.

@fullinfusion, how many 290 have you borked now?

is that 4 or 5 you have had to return?

4 and 5th a charm. They sent me a brand new 290X as an upgrade ;)

And the Gelid extreme paste is by far the leader in my testing and won't use anything but from now on.

liquid ultra here and i feel very much that same about it.

icd is the best of the normal pastes from my testing, even if it has its risks but liquid ultra makes that look like toothpaste.

just not as easy to get hold of a solid supply over here :(

Up Date Guys:  MSI 290X gaming 4G TFIV V2 card owners only.... Here's a new Bios update as of today, November 27/2014. POSTED ON THE OP'S #1 POST

It don't clock as well but the memory timings and other things are WAY better with this EUFI/GOP bios flashed to the #2 bios that it is better in benches and games.

Don't flash to the #1 switch as there's something different with it all together. But What? I'm not sure, but PLEASE make a back up of your original bios just in-case.

Enjoy cooler temps and higher scores :D

Quick question: is BIOS 015.044.000.014 the latest version for the R9 290X Lightning (the card is listed as V307 on the box)? I just received my card yesterday...

Sorry for ressurecting this thread guys but I need help -

I have an R9 290X Msi Gaming 4 GB. Fans are dying, there is crazy rattling going on post 90.

I need to either sell it off, or place a custom cooler. I'm looking at the second option. Will this work?

Gelid Icy Vision Rev 2 ATI

as long as the boards design matches the reference most aftermarket coolers should work. go to the Gelid Website

Or just strap on 1-2 120mm fans on it with some zip ties :), i be kinda lucky though being a owner of a MK-13 as it had fans on a separate holder for the fans ( second vid ).

But as eidairaman1 says just check if it's compatable like a reference card or not, better still drop Gelid a email and ask them they might be able to help you.

Thank you both for your responses.
Strapping 2 120mms sounds plausible; question is - should I use a splitter to connect them to the GPU's fan output, or to the MB's fan output? Any experience with that?

I personally use motherboard but you could use a fan controller too.

I use two Cougar 120x25mm fans which are not that loud at 1500RPM.

Thanks - but my question would be, if on the MB, how is the RPM controlled based on the card's heat?
I mean, with MSI Gaming, the onboard fan speed is controlled by MSI Afterburner on auto, based on GPU heat. Is there a similar way to achieve this through my MB? By the way, I have the Z97-A.

Some fans have a thermal sensor, and as for being attached to the motherboard well that will depend on how hot it gets and if the motherboard has software to adjust to requirements..
