Something to tide me over

So today I dicked around trying to decide whether to get a Sapphire Tri-x or MSI Twin Frozr 290x. By the time I made up my mind on the Sapphire it was sold out. So, i thought, no big deal I'll just get the MSI. Wrong. It was sold out too. So now I have everything coming for a new build except a GPU. My first question is do you guys know how long Newegg usually stays out of stock on items like this? Secondly, if I was to drop down to a 280 would there be that big of a difference. I've looked at the scores and avg. fps and all but I would like to hear from someone that has actually used similar products. I am hoping to be able to play BF4, Crysis 3, etc. I don't really care about ultra settings but I'm hoping I won't have to bottom everything out too.

That third one looks like a winner. I didn't want to spend over 300 on one but was willing to go over a tad cause of the sales today.

before the price slash i needed a GPU and I paid 472 for mine, so honestly I think 300 dollars is alot better

the 290 only has a few shaders less but can make up in overclock.

The electricity costs are negligible unless you are doing something stupid with the cards... Regardless, the 290 is like 50 bucks less than the 970, so I think it would be better value.

Thanks for the replies. I have to say though, with my very limited knowledge on the subject, these replies seem a little misleading. I've looked at graph after graph about the performance and power usage of these cards. In most of them the 970 does out perform the 290x by a slight margin. Do you guys think I would really ever notice that? Is there really any difference in real word usage? And the power usage. From what I can find, the 290x will use ~50 watts more power under full load. By my calculation, if I used my PC for 3 hours a day under full load, that equals out to around $8 a year.

I don't mean to come off as ungrateful or a jerk. And I may be completely off base here. Just saying some people may waste money on something they will never notice.

your talking to a group of people that consider slight margins when making even $200 price differentials. the 290 is fine enjoy your card.

Exactly, can play games like Shadow of Mordor on Ultra, and AC Unity on MUCH better settings than a mere 290 would handle. And more future ready too. That's a lot for only $50 more.
