Nope but dont see a problem with it...

Why did the thing get wet enough to have to bake it in the first place? Just use rubbing alcohol to get it off....

Omg seriously!? Get a compressor and initially wring it out then use compressor to blow excess water out, or just set it on a table.

With fins being that thin id say no to ovens period. Also what would happen if the solution in the heatpipes are overstressed? Possible making the hs a big paper weight

I highly doubt the temperatures he will put it through (worst case in an over is what, 500F?) will change the properties of the metal... the worst case is the solder runs and possibly loses contact with any heatpipes... that would be the only way I could think it would affect performance..

Using a hairdryer is the safer way to dry a heatsink fast IMO.

The heatsink is fine and CPU temps are actually really good.

We don't have a compressor, canned air, or a hair dryer at the place where we were building a desktop.

Nor did we have rubbing alcohol.

The highest we had it at was 190F.

It really doesn't take rubbing alcohol... there is no reason a heatsink should be soaked to get rid of old TIM... seriously. :)

It was the brand-new-out-of-the-box paste and we wanted AC5 on it instead.

That has nothing to do with what I said... most TIM will simply rub off with a paper towel/wash rag/qtip... some you have to scrape, but water doesn't help anyway.

Please don't soak your heatsinks... while likely not harmful, its not remotely needed either. :)

Ever bake a heatsink?
I cooked my GPU's heat sink in water last year...

Get a compressor and initially wring it out then use compressor to blow excess water out, or just set it on a table.
What I did was to leave it in a closed pan without anything in just the heat sink. It dried completely in few minutes.

It took a while to cool down. :)

LOL, let me clarify... Please don't soak your heatsink when trying to remove TIM... there is no reason for THAT. :)

As I said, I doubt its harmful, but water doesn't help remove TIM in any way in the first place so why soak it and go through all the effort in the first place?

I've washed many heatsinks, motherboards, video cards etc in hot soapy water to clean off smoke film. Rinse and dry well and it's not a problem. PCBs I rinse with distilled water .. as I have lots of it from our de-humidifier. :D

Used to use dishwasher but wife threw a hissy-fit and threatened to do serious damage to family jewels if I did it again.

Yep, distilled water and Dawn dish soap does wonders on motherboards and video cards. Just got to remember to pull the 3 volt onboard battery.
