Hi,

Sorry for the long post but I wanted to provide as much info as possible for a better solution.

I have been experiencing strange clicking sounds [please see link] coming from my XFX HD 4850 lately [or it can be from PSU?].

I have been using this card since 2009 [5 years].

It used to be very rare, only at bootup, but ever since I have started playing Bioshock infinite, it has become much more frequent.

Initially I did not get any problems playing, but last time I could only manage 1 hr and then 30 mins before pc crashed.

Today when I started the pc, there was not any of that sound, but after 40 minutes the hideous sound started and after few seconds pc shutdown.

This happened again and again with shorter time frames.

Interesting thing is I did not even played the game, was only browsing the potential problem on the net.

Gpu, seemed very hot.

Using GPUz, I started monitoring and gpu temp went from 60-70C range to 119C within 25 minutes before it shut down! So it seems gpu is the reason.

I put a bit of load [23%] on gpu by emulating a game in pj64 during that time.

I had got my power outlets checked by a voltmeter few days ago, the electrician said they were fine.

My desktop airflow is good, never had a high temp problem with my cpu and 1 side of the cover is always open.

My questions are:

-Can I underclock my gpu so that it consumes less power?

-Do i need to install ccc, since I haven't earlier?

-I used an air blower a couple of months ago and also cleaned the gpu with a brush, did'nt find much dust or any object blocking the fans.

I can't rma since I had a bad time doing that in the last few times[other h/w, long wait]. Also I don't have a built in gfx with this build.

What do you suggest?

Thanks.

Update:

After i cleaned my pc again with air blower and also the gpu separately, tested the system.

Starting temps were better [from 60c instead of 75c] and biggest difference was the dramatic reduction in fans rpm [previously 262 and now 50-70 rpm] and noise.

But bad news is during those 15-20 mins, the gpu temps kept rising again [even at 0% gpu load], and once i put a bit of load on gpu [15-20%, via pj64 emulater] it rose to 120c before pc shutdown again.

So does it means I have to apply thermal paste too? Or can this be fixed if i update the gpu driver?

Forget playing Bioshock infinite, I can't even use my pc for work now :(

Please, any solutions/suggestions will be really appreciated.

Hi

Welcome to TPU

So does it means I have to apply thermal paste too?

Applying New thermal paste and pads, would be a good starting point.

Note: Use a non-conducting paste that has no metal particles MX4 or Other

Are you sure the GPU fan is working? 155 RPM is way too low for a fan; it should be spinning at above 2000 RPM.

The "hideous sound" sounds exactly like a fan that has ball bearings failing, and I would think the high temperature during playing a game would accelerate the seizure of bearings thus why the problem has been getting worse.

open the case and check the fan first, i agree maybe your fans arent working right or maybe start but it suddenly slows down or the fans spin but slow
its hardware related so it doesnt matter what version of driver etc

i suggest replace the fans and replace the paste too then recheck it again

I had a reference HD 4850 and it ran pretty hot, not as hot as yours, but hot nonetheless.
What I suggest is if you have a reference cooler (single slot) to take apart the cooler, because this design of cooler is more prone to getting dust build up at the intake section of the copper heatsink.
After that, wipe the current thermal paste with something else (any thermal paste would suffice, I was using white goo on my 4850).
Then, take apart the fan (there are guides on youtube for that) and apply some industrial grease (about a droplet is enough). My HD 5870 started making a rough noise at idle and load and got me scared, I opened it up and found up that there hadn't been any lubricating application at the factory. I applied some, and it's completely fixed.
Overall, I think the problem with your card is the fan, since you mentioned that there is a hideous noise. I would try lubricating the fan and doing everything else that I mentioned in the process because you will have already opened the card.

Hey Op,

If your fan is spinning that slow, its probably a seized bearing and the fan needs to be replaced. Depending on the model, we may have replacement parts we can send you for free. Please PM me or make a ticket at xfxsupport.com.

If we don't have the fan, we can still RMA it for warranty servicing.

Thanks!

Thank you Law-II, The Von Matrices, micropage7, ISI300 and XFXSupport!

@Law-II
Is arctic silver good? I have read good things on the internet. I know thermal paste, but what are the pads?
Actually let me first check the fans again coz I was told about the low rpm.

@The Von Matrices
Yes I will check that again. My gpu rpm does seem very low as compared to normal range [2000s].
The noise was almost gone after I thoroughly cleaned the gpu, sadly temps kept rising like before.

@micropage7
Exactly! I have this feeling too, so gonna monitor this specifically.

@ISI300
Mine only has a single default fan and cooler/heatsink. Never even laid a finger to change anything on the gpu.
I keep 1 side of my case open so airflow is always good, or atleast it used to be.
There was dust alright which i thoroughly cleaned and used air blower.
Might have to go for xfx repair/support center for more technical stuff coz I don't know much about it.
How old is your gpu? Hope yours and everbody's h/w keep performing well!

@XFXSupport
I have been trying to reach your support since yesterday, really glad I found u guys here!
I tried creating a support ticket at xfxsupport.com, but kept receiving an error [s/n not found] when i provided my s/n.
Sent an email to helpdesk@xfxforce.com but got delivery error.
Then I created a general inquiry at xfxsupport.com, so far didn't got any reply but happy to know you responded here.
I have tried to pm [start conversation?] you with all the details, but ironically I got an error here as well:

This seems odd, maybe due to sheer length of my post.

So tell me how to contact you? Can you guys share your current email?

Arctic Silver 5
Use it sparingly do not allow it to overlap the GPU as it is produced with *silver [*metal] it may interfere with components next to the GPU die
Note: Arctic Silver is predominantly used with CPU's [not GPU/VPU] source here

Thermal Pads
If are careful when removing the heat/fan sink, may be able to reuse these for the Memory and VRM's; [Note: replacement would be ideal]
Example

Thanks go out to Cybrnook2002 for detailed post

NB: best of luck with the low RPM

Thank you again.

The fan is not working at all now, no rpm what so ever. Now it reaches that temp [abt 120c] quicker, around 10 mins before pc shuts.

If I was able to buy a new gpu I would in a heartbeat, but unfortunately I am not in a position to invest even that much money.

So it seems the only way is to get the fan replaced, any recommendations/advice for that?

Again, really appreciate your help.

Hi

The fan is not working at all now, no rpm what so ever.
In that case contact the XFX rep direct here if have not already done so; see what XFX can do, may be able to ship the part required

Note: If XFX are unable to assist, check out the *Arctic Cooling Accelero S1 Plus Graphics Card Cooler [Note: *will require the S1 turbo module (a fan that attaches to the heat sink)]

sometimes people put fans up on ebay as well

what do you mean 'that much money', what amount are you thinking? you can get faster than 4850 performance below $100 new or just go used

another thing, 4850 has been legacy for a couple years now, no real driver update since spring 2012, plenty of existing bugs not fixed

i know 5870s for example have dropped below $100 so consider this... 4850 slower than 4870, 2x 4870 = 5870 = big boost for bioshock infinite, not to mention dx11 capability & driver updates

now the cheapest fastest option is to put at least one case fan on the card with zip ties, making sure the air goes through the copper fins

another possibility is to attempt to repair the fan itself, but that's probably not a reliable idea

oh & having the side of the case open is not a guarantee that airflow is better, it can actually make it slightly worse if the case is well designed with good front intake, this is based on my testing with a 4870x2 & an antec900 + corsair 500r

It is similar to what I did to mine... :)

You can buy one of these fans really cheap as well, if you don't have one. I am talking about < $5.

And it is still working!

@Law-II
Thanks again. I contacted the xfx guy but he says my card is well out of warranty period which it is [5 years] and they can't ship to my place.

@kn00tcn
Thank you very much! Such a brilliant way to use case fan!
I didn't know 5870s have become so cheap, they haven't in my region though [S-Asia].
But I will try your solution, wish me good luck.
Have you personally experienced it? If so how long have you been using this fan with your gpu?

@Blue-Knight
Thank you too! You and kn00tcn have really made me hopeful!
How long have you been using this fan with your gpu?

Guys can you also tell me why the fan died? I mean I didn't put load on my gpu for quiet a long time, perhaps 2-3 years i think. The noise from fans had started before bioshock 3.

Anyway I will test this solution, will post the result here.

Thanks again. Awesome community you have here.

it doesnt matter how long since you can always get another case fan :nutkick:

fans will die, some faster than others depending on bearing design or how much dust entered them (or sometimes in my case, how many times my fingers accidentally smashed the fan while it was in use)

problem is the card in my pics doesnt have a temp sensor, it's a 9800pro with a custom vantec iceberq 5 cooler where the cooler's fan died after a couple years

i also had an x800xtpe with a zalman vf700cu where its fan also died... i ended up pointing a case fan in the general direction of the cooler since that computer wasnt used for gaming anymore... idle temps were still better than the stock cooler, but eventually i may have killed the card when handling it during a case swap

anyway it doesnt matter what crazy cooling idea is being used, all that matters is the gpu + vrms + maybe vram to have heatsinks & airflow while being satisfied with the resulting temperatures
