I'm not sad. I think instead we should honor him by celebrating his many inventions and fathering what is now the largest grossing entertainment industry on the planet. I'm not sure he'd be happy with some of the commercialization, but it seems he lived a long and happy life. At the end of the day, this is a reminder that video gamers and gaming is not evil, and that good people and good things can come from it and that you can live a long and happy life remembering that to retain your childlike innocence, is a virtue like none other.

Thanks Ralph, this one's for you...:toast:

I think there was a Modern Marvels episode that featured him. Atari basically stole the idea so he didn't get the credit he deserved until later.

What Ralph Baer made was basically a white dot on a CRT that you could control. It had no collision or anything. Atari took the idea of a white dot, added paddles, and made them collide and keep score: Pong was born. Baer really didn't have a game per say but the concept of controlling visual elements for entertainment started the video game industry.

I had the honor to listen to Ralph Baer in person at a design conference several years ago. He was absolutely amazing, not just the inventions but the patents to protect the work and the engineering magic this man and his colleagues worked. He was a great presenter too.

Arguably, this site may not have even existed if it weren't for him.
