Hi all,

Recently purchased one of these, and having ongoing issues in games. I currently game at 3440 x 1440 and whatever I'm playing my frame rates will drop and stay that way until I exited the game.

I figured out (okay it's not that difficult) that my graphics card was being throttled.

As soon as it hits 75oC powerplay kicks in and the core speed drops (as seen in MSI Afterburner, GPU-Z, etc.).

I've tried everything to lock my clocks to ~1Ghz and 1.2Ghz on the memory but it's not playing ball, I've set +50 on the power limit and increased/decreased core voltage and set unofficial overclocking mode to "without powerplay support" and "disabled ULPS" mode with no change, as soon as it gets to 75oC the clocks just drop and I get crappy game play/low framerates.

Anybody had a similar solution and how did you resolve it, I've looked around and noone else seems to have experienced this issue.

Currently there is no way for me to decrease the ambient temperature or increase cooling capacity outside of installing an aircon unit but my old 7970 would happily sit at 80-90oC (in the summer, ran a lot cooler than this during winter!) all day playing games without issue.

Anyway appreciate any comments and suggestions.

Did you install that power crap with the drivers? I'd remove that and see.

Get a proper cooling solution for the card. The single rad isn't remotely enough to keep this thing cool in a lot of situations.

Where do you have your radiators for the CPU and the 295x2 located? If the 295x2 rad is using case air, you may want to have it as an intake to get the best possible temps...

Did you try undervolting the card at stock speeds to see if you can gain a couple C that way too? Normally simply lowering clocks wont make a huge difference in power consumption considering the voltage will remain the same. ;)

Only things installed are the ones attached below.

I've tried lowering the core voltage which usually results in the system hanging.

Case set up is case in my System specs, with dual rad at the top cooling my CPU exhausting air outwards and GPU fan at the rear exhausting air outwards again.

Ideally looking for a solution that eliminates the 75oC limit... I'd try and get more fans in there but currently I have an Areca 1882ix and a Mushkin Scorpion deluxe installed below it.

You could try adding another fan on that rad, or try opening the case up. What are your room temps and case temps?

Hi

I would check the power cable: if attached to header on the motherboard, make sure it is not set to eco mode in motherboard bios.

Other things that will increase heat
antialiasing [set to high]
ambient Occlusion [enabled]

Note: use third party application to limit fps in games. [over drawing frames will raise temps]

GPU fan at the rear exhausting air outwards again.
Should that not be the other way round, drawing fresh air in across the rad from the rear of the case!

Push pull on that radiator for the 295x2 would help...

I like the limiting FPS thing (vsync) as well... good call there!

I think I'm going to start adding more fans, thing is my computer is currently consuming about enough power to start up a fusion generator and it makes the noise to go with that kind of generation.

Think that's a good idea to limit frames, although I feel cheated losing frames.

Uninstalled, once I get home I'll add more fans and just go from there.

Ideally like a solution that removes the heat limit as I'll be back to square one next Summer (or even Spring!).

Do what I did... go custom and get an appropriate amount of radiator for the setup. ;)

I have a thick 2x120mm rad up top and a 3x120mm rad up front to cool a 4930K and the 295x2. I haven't seen the 295x2 hit more than 55C ever (20C ambient room, note).

Argh I really don't want to go custom again, what a ball-ache.

Although saying that I guess I bought an enthusiast card so what do I expect.

Will report back with additional fan implementation.

You know in Catalyst you can set the limits higher than what it starts with. Have you tried changing it as under the overclocking area there is a spot to change and allow higher limits.

Unfortunately it already is...

Please note that that is my idle temperature currently.

You idle at 52C? Yikes... What is your airflow like in that case? The front are intake, correct?

I have one of those cases and plan to build in it soon. I hope it doesn't have airflow problems.

I have one with the hardware listed... its fine. I have 3 Yate Loons blowing through a 3x120mm rad on the front, another 2 up top, and a 140mm on the rear. No issues.

I actually did not realize that the max was 75 in CCC on the 295x2. I thought it was just set to that default but you could set it higher...

If its hitting the threshold, I would drop the power limit back to stock and try hitting the fan speed to higher levels when temps get near.

The odd thing is that your idle is so high, you may have an airflow problem.

Good. It's been sitting here for a long time, waiting for other parts. Not sure about what fans or rads to use in it yet. Trying to decide what CPU will go into it. (i5-4690K or i7-4790K)

If the temp slowly rises while it idle the pump might be dead.

Okay, completely redesigned the case with differing airflow configurations and still no joy. Still hitting the 75oC limit...

Not wanting to blame the case at this stage, will have to figure out a way to increase airflow.

Shame as a stock solution should be able to run at stock speeds perpetually without much issue!

And yes I have tried to set the power limit to 0% but it actually results in clocks dropping sooner.

As far as I know there is currently no modded bios without powerplay feature enabled.

Is the fan getting really loud on the 295X2?

Also is the air coming off the radiator hot?
