What I loved about Anno is how all the systems and the economy works. I tend to play that just to build some good looking stuff and making it work.

I dreaded the limited ways to build your towns the way you want, your screenies show this too, you're forced to build compact within circles, any space lost on decoration is always a disadvantage. And I didn't like the way the game handles warfare, seems a bit too limited.

well you are free to blow them up but i know what you mean. you can remove only the pirate from the map completely. but other NPCs will remain no matter what.
so its best to stay at peace. except when you want an island with the right fertilities... then i go full hurr durr mode with the aircrafts and take over one by one by destroying their warehouse and replacing with mine.... after its done.. i just go back to being at peace.

I came across Rise of Nations and the expansion pack on sale on Steam for $5. The game is about 10 years old but it's been updated and I loved this game. I'm going to pick it up tomorrow for some games this weekend.

IF the anno AI didn't cheat so horribly that game would be great. It absolutely ruins the game for me. It's like the developers got lazy and didn't want to make an AI, so they just figured "Let's let them start with EVERYTHING unlocked and not have to worry about money or resources at all"

That's the exact issue I have with the Anno series. It's so good but the AI kills you too quickly.

Anyone tried Dominions 4: Thrones of Ascension? It's 35 USD on Desura and Steam. Graphics look ancient, but gameplay seems good.

Lambda Wars (Half Life 2: Wars mod) is free on steam. Basically a DoW style RTS in the Half Life world. It's a mod for Alien Swarm I think.

Rise of Nations is so good, I need to get that on Steam! I wish they would redo Empire Earth 3 and make it playable...I used to have good fun with that when it wouldn't crash. Also, I saw Stronghold Crusader 2 was out - anybody tried it?

FA is awesome, when you have the time to play it and still want flat maps. PA is for a sizeable scope with quick playtimes and action. Sure PA games can take a while, but my average games are 15-30 min, which is a fraction of my average FA game.

PA has a pretty fun concept imho, if you don't go into it expecting it to be Supreme Commander or Total Annihilation for 2015...but take it for the lighter-hearted, action RTS with a multi-planet scope that it is.

RTS genre is so time consuming. I remember the 90s when I didn't sleep for days, playing Red Alert and Tiberian Sun. C&C series is the boom of that era.
I wish there was a remake of original C&C and Red Alert.

Cossacks and Age of Empires were good games too but got old really quick.

Coh is the best rts IMHO . The first one because they made alot of changes in the second and it became much more comlicated . For old school rts the early Command & Conquer games were also great .

It's hard to talk about early RTS without bringing up Total Annihilation. I'm not sure that any title had such a grand impact. Sure, C&C was very fun and popular, but TA showed what was possible and what the future held. It still plays well to this day.

I love CoH, still play it LAN with a few friends every now and then. graphics held up fairly well too.

As for a new entry, theres an alpha game called RimWorld - its hard to explain, but imagine if an RPG, an RTS and the sims had violent sex.

Angry mobs of tribal villagers, space marines, limb amputations, malaria, hordes of angry squirrels... the game lets you think you've got everything all sorted and then slaps you in the face.
