Hello all. I have a 2 TB Western Digital My Book that is probably 4 or 5 years old or so. Here is my problem, well multiple problems..

If I have the external plugged into my computer when I boot I noticed it will take longer at the mobo splash screen. If I try to load bios it will get hung up and never even make it to the BIOS. It gets to the screen of loading all peripherals and things like that and gets stuck on loading the USB one that the hard drive is plugged into. I am sure that is a terrible way of explaining it but that's all I can come up with right now haha. If I unplug it and reboot and then try to go to the BIOS it will make it there just fine.

Second issue: I have noticed that when trying to browse my external it will just hang up. I will click to open a folder and it will freeze for about 6 seconds then load the folder. Sometimes it will take upwards of 15 seconds or more to load a folder even if it is something like 10mb in size. If I try to move files off of it too quickly, they will copy to my desktop at less than a meg a second.

So, is it finally taking a crap? Just double checked and it is out of warranty :/ If this is this case I would say I got my use out of it as when I did get it I got it for $90 which 5 or 6 years ago, wasn't bad at all for a 2TB.

It's probably dying. I'd just replace it to be safe. It could be a bad cable or bad port, you can try changing both first, but after that long of use I'd replace it just to be safe anyway.

Yeah that's what I figured. Tried a different port and that didn't fix it either :/

I had a 1TB WD MyBook where the controller in the enclosure failed but the drive itself was okay. I was able to remove the drive and use SATA to use it internally. If you're out of options, I would try ripping the drive out and connecting it internally. If it failed and is unusable, it doesn't hurt to try.

Try using Western Digital diagnostics, pick your model, @:

http://support.wdc.com/product/download.asp?level1=1&lang=en

http://support.wdc.com/product/download.asp?groupid=810&sid=3&lang=en

There might also be a firmware update available.

Alright. So I started the scan and it went on for about two minutes until this happened... I take it this means that it is definitely failing?

Quick Test on Drive 3 did not complete!
Status code = 07 (Failed read test element) Failure checkpoint = 97
(Unknown Test)
Smart Self Test did not complete on Drive 3!

Hi there satindemon4u!

I'm sorry to say that, but this error code means that your My Book drive is indeed about to die, so my advise will be to backup your data from it.

Best of luck! :)

uhhh can we see the actual smart values? we still havent confirmed if it's the enclosure (or even motherboard) causing it

I had to side with Might Miro on this one. A failure of a SMART test is practically a dead giveaway sign that the drive itself is failing.

I think the WD rep knows when its bad. But being out of warranty he should go head and break it open and test it

I wouldn't suggest to open the external because of the hardware encryption - when you remove the encrypted drive from the enclosure, you can't use it without formatting it first, which will erase all your data from it. And since satindemon4u can still access the data on the drive, the best thing would be to back it up than trying to open it. :)

I thought the older My Books didn't have encryption whereas the newer ones and the Passport do. Could you clarify as to when this changed? I want to know if that's the case for mine as well.

After a back up of course. Then format and check it with Crystal Disk

Can you tell me the exact model of your My Book drive so I can check if it has a hardware encryption?

Well, good to know now. I guess I will pull the data, wipe it, and then do a check with crystal disk. Sound about right?

@ satindemon4u, the reallocated sector count (id5) shows value 200 with a threshold of 140. The logic circuit can no longer account for bad sectors on the disk and you could be potentially writing to bad areas of the disk. Sometimes failures cascade quickly so don't wait.

It also looks like the motor that spins the disks has reached end of life.

Time to replace or warranty claim.

Back up data to another source asap.

I'm sorry to say that, but this error code means that you have to replace your drive. And since this is a second time such test results appear my advice will be to backup the data to a different location (despite the slow speed).

Best of luck! :)

Time to learn how to read SMART, friend.

The OP needs to use a different tool that shows raw SMART data. The "value" isn't the actual value of the smart attribute (people fall for this all the time). You want the raw data for each SMART attribute as it will actually tell you what's going on.
smart.JPG

Notice the "Data" field. Mine also says 140:200:200 (Threshold, Value, Worst) for reallocated sector count, however I have no reallocated sectors as seen by the raw data. That tool isn't telling you values, it's just showing the attribute.

So should I grab the same program that you are using there?

a) Back up your data
b) Bust it out of that usb thingy and hook it up via SATA :D

It's at least worth a shot..

extra interfaces=extra problems

It could just be your USB port cutting out a la p67 style.
