I have two Compaq Evo D510 sff. I just want to know how many months or years before it cant be used anymore for net surfing, download and watching YouTube and movies?

u might struggle with 1080p Video playback on them on youtube, but u can always add a dedicated grafikkort for that part if u can find any that can do it for u.

I think you would be fine for just browsing & YT. No dedicated GPU might hurt it a little when it comes to 1080p.

Ive had a single core AMD processor with 4gigs PC3200 running Vista and it ran well enough for an internet or word processing machine.

The same machine ran L4D1 & quite a few other steam games with everything set to the highest level when i paired it with a X850XTPE. L4D1 stuttered a little when loading into the game but once that was done, the performance was solid.

Obviously i wouldnt consider it much of a gaming machine even for casual gamers.

Though Im well aware that AMD processors performed significantly better than intel P4's back in those days when it came to gaming anyway so it cant really be compared to the P4 but its rather a loose comparison anyway

I've got a couple of D510s given away by work years ago and boy are they slow! They were slow and tended to bottleneck easily back in the day let alone now. I think they used the i810 chipset which wasn't very good even in its heyday. In short, I would get something a little better. Even the cheapest possible system will be miles better than one of these nowadays.

I used mine as an IPCop firewall, which it ran quite well. The other is just a spare.

Somewhat on topic question... been wondering this for years...

How do you use a dedicated GPU for video playback (youtube, movies et al)? Does the GPU automatically kick in when a video is playing? Does it matter what it (the video) is? Do I need a browser plugin or something to use GPU for youtube videos? What about Windows Media Player, or other media players? Does it matter if I pop in a retail DVD/Blu-Ray in my optical drive or if I play a video file off my hard drive?

Automagically. It depends on the application playing it.

Oh yes. GPU decoding requires that video be encoded a certain way. It has become a little more broad in the sense that most H.264 encoded video is supported but it wasn't always like that.

Flash player will use GPU acceleration if the GPU and driver support it. HTML5 video will be accelerated if the browser, gpu, and drivers support it.

Window Media Player is very particular for which video formats will be processed using DXVA. Media Player Classic tends to decode most H.264 files on hardware, at least that's the case for my 6870s. I suspect GCN and modern GPU architectures support more formats.

In what sense? DVD and Blu-Ray will probably get GPU decoded every time whereas a video on your own hard drive needs to be in the right format and in a player that supports GPU acceleration for that format in addition to GPU and driver support.

My following question to that is Can the Videolan player replace FlashPlayer for videos if i install the vlc internet explorer plugin?

Well to answer your questions. It really depends on your lever of patents. In my opinion its not worth it. I have limited time for allowing a cpu struggle with apps.

And yes the VLC player will work but again its too frustrating using a single core cpu let alone a P4

These computers are for donations when I will hear that a poor family need it. So thank you Jetster to donate your time answering without judging it helps me to help others.
I donate my time, my handship, some money when I need to buy little stuff and also car fuel to go buy things.
Doing it with my heart and I'm pleased to help some people that want a small computer for their kids or for younger parents that struggle and really want to move their ass and get a diploma to make their family living in better conditions.

That's the spirit of Christmas even if i'm a non-believer except I do it all year long.

Not completely useless yet. I have a few, ranging from 1.5 to 3Ghz. They still play music and videos fine(1080p is a struggle unless you have a more modern dedicated gpu), and normal internet browsing is still more or less doable. So they still have some use, as long as its not gaming or anything similarly demanding.

flash uses it, and there is a tickbox if its supported. In all my testing, even on PC's as powerful as mine - hardware acceleration was slower, and used more power at the wall.

I've played 15GB 1080p video files back on 32MB intel IGP's, so i dont know why everyone thinks the GPU is responsible for video playback when its not.

That completely depends on how the H.264 was encoded. I can see a 1080p baseline profile maybe working okay but encoding with the high profile might cause issues because as 1080p encoding quality goes up, so does the power required to decode it.

unless you are running a video from a DVD or BD, DXVA is almost never used - so any local file playback by default is done on the CPU and the CPU alone.

Youtube can go either way, but since you can adjust the resolution there anyway its not that big of a deal.
