3 pin fan running slow on 4 pin header

I could use some help. I just bought some new 3 pin fans for my case. I bought four fans for 3 headers. So naturally, I bought a splitter. I just connected all the fans. They all run fine except for the one on the 4 pin header. I first thought it was because I connected the the splitter to that header, but after switching the spit fans on the 4 pin header with a single fan, the header still runs the fan really slow. I'm not sure why this is, I'm probably missing something, but I'm not sure what. I am overclocked, if that might be the issue. (I dont think so) Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

Update: I got the fan to work, but my motherboard isn't scaling the fans based on load. Are fans suppose to run at full speed on 3 pin headers, or is something broken?

It depends on the motherboard. Some boards control the speed of 3 pin fans, some don't.

Thanks for the tip. It isn't really clear, but I guess mine doesn't.

I have some experience with that specific 990FX board (I am assuming based on specs that is the one were talking about right?)

If you want the fans to go full speed you have to go into the bios and actually set the fan curve. Gigabyte does this system where depending on the board and temps the fan speed will curve slowly up to a point using a system (Personally hate this actually) where it increases the fan curve by small intervals default until temps start exceeding certain points (Looks like this, or at least close).

You can change the fan header controls to manual and then enable higher speeds based on temps. Or if you just want full speed you can go to each fan header and change the setting to full speed like this. Should at least be similar to your board variant but the settings are about the same board to board on Gigabyte.

Thats the problem, it is not curving. It's going full speed all the time. I thought 3 pin fans were supposed to change voltage based on load/temp but even at idle my fans are going at 1500 or so RPM. Is that suppose to happen? This defeats the purpose of using 3 pin fans instead of the molex ones I replaced.

Try switching it to manual mode on the CPU fan control and then changing the fan ramping speed. It maybe that the board cannot control those fans but normally even if they are not PWN fans and are just 3 pins you should have some control.

I thought the problem was they were not ramping up not that they were stuck at full speed.

So, you think changing the CPU setting will effect the fans on the headers?

Err sorry I misspoke, I meant to say just change the fan header settings on the fan headers you have hooked up not the CPU one specific.

There is only an option for System Fan 1. The rest don't have a setting, I assume because they aren't PWM.

Can you take a picture of the bios screen with the fan settings and upload it so I can see exactly what your seeing. Also which headers are the fans plugged into?

My fans are plugged into all the headers. Splitter to power fan header, one to system fan header 1 and the other to system fan header 2.

Have you tried changing the system fan speed control option to manual or one of the other options? The screenshot shoes it saying disabled is why I was asking.

I think the other options fail to put it in PWM mode. Either way, how does that help with the rest of my fans? I'm getting the feeling I am out of luck... :-(
