Fan replacement for RADs

Hello guys,

The following is my system: http://pcpartpicker.com/user/eadgaar/saved/FQ6KHx

The computer has been getting too hot for comfort, but I am only pretty much running the fan for the water cooler, while I wait for fan splitters. I will be adding a NZXT Kraken G10 to my system and a second H55 for the GPU, but I feel like the fan doesn't move enough air, so, I want to replace the stock H55 fan with another 120mm, that moves more air.

I don't want to spend more than $30 USD on each fan; no leds required, I rather them not be noisy, but rather a frosty system. I can always turn up the volume.

I am aware that the 2nd RAD will require my second drive bay to be removed, but I plan to figure something out.

Can my power supply take it? What fan? Or do I even need to replace the fans?

Heres what i would do.......

Get rid of the H55 - Forget the idea of running a G-10 Kracken. Get yourself a Corsair H100i or H105 for the top - that will answer the problem with cooling the CPU but also having enough air moving inside your case - Keep the 120mm or 140mm fan at the back, & throw out the optical drive and get an external USB one.

Recommend you get a 200mm or 230mm fan for the front of that case, I know Anter makes one but im not sure about other brands - that 200 or 230mm fan will keep the airflow going

Not the cheapest solution but you dug yourself into a bit of a pit when you put a 290 inside such a small case....

Anyway, good luck.

Oh... and if you dont want to do ANY of what i said, then migrate your system over to a mid tower - Antec & Corsair makes good ones - even the cheapo Antec cases have amazing airflow - plastic is a little cheap but you cant go wrong with an Antec - Ive built many systems with cheap mid tower cases and quite a lot of them have been utter beasts.

Why wouldn't I run a G10?

The major issue with the build, that I have found is that the heat does not dissipate. Most of the heat I feel comes from the gpu, so, I would water cool and get better fans.

The system is meant to be as small and compact as possible. That is my only reason against removing the optical drive. I would add a 240mm rad to the top, but the optical drive would block the air flow.

I dont know - 2x120mm rads just looks silly (to me) and takes up unnecessary space and space is not what you have....

alternatively, throw out the H55 - get a H80i it has a thicker rad, and mount 2x140mm fans at the top of the case and throw either a 140, 200 or 230mm at the front. Cuz you want the air flow.

the G-10 only really really matters if you have excess money to spend so you want things to run cooler/quieter or if you plan to overclock that card.

you can get compact external optical drives for pretty cheap - theyre pretty much laptop slimline drives in a slim external housing - I have a Lite-on one only used it twice in the last 3 or 4 years. Samsung makes some pretty good ones too.

A couple of days later, but I decided to test something else before I replied....

I installed a 200mm fan to the the case, as well as a 2nd 120mm fan to the rad I already have. It has worked well, but I am still interested interested on a 240mm rad for my gpu. I know that your opinion of a g10 plus ran and a gpu is not that positive, but do you think that a second rad in my system would be beficial?

a 240mm & 120mm rad might not fit in your case all at the same time. Heres a pic just so you have a general idea

Im not sure if the fan at the front even has a rad fan attached.

I mean, if you want to go ahead with it then by all means but if it dont work out then dont come back to me and say i didnt tell you any better since im the only one that gave you my input in this thread - I know of a few other people who have or did have this case but they havent left their input.

Alot of the dual rad setups were more full on water cooling loops instead of 2 AIO's inside 1 case. when you can have a custom loop it opens up a lot of opportunities.

I was thinking of actually adding the rad and fans outside of the case and just adding ran grills. I'm mostly wprried that my psu might not be able to deal with it but I think it would since I dont oc.

I don't think water cooling the GPU is necessary. You main issue is getting the heat out of the case.

Pick up one of these for your H55, which I assume is attached to the back fan mount and exhausting air out of the case: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835706036

Then you can either grab two more for the top of the case, or this pair of Corsair AF fans. You don't really need an intake fan, but if you already have the 200mm fan you can leave it, it won't hurt anything.

For what it's worth, I have two 240's, and a 140 in my prodigy case, cooling the 2500k and gtx 680 (both heavily overclocked) to reasonable temps and noise levels. One of the 240's is screwed to the top of the chassis, above the grille, not below it.

Subbing for interest. I'm having similar thoughts for my Xigmatek Aquila case, although I'm only dealing with a 120mm radiator, I'd like to sandwich a few fans on it. Curious to know what solutions others have come up with.

Actually the HTPC is a second build. This is my gaming build.

And I thought my wire management was bad. Lol. Thank for the pick.

For right now, I'm going to add 2 120mm fans on the top and maybe a little later add the rad and g10. The gaming computer is my little project don't feel confidant enough to build my own custom water loop.

This ^^

Aircool the GPU... make sure you have a good OUTFLOW fan on your case with nothing impeding it, and make sure that your rad is the INTAKE for the best cooling. So many people try to watercool their rigs by exhausting caseheat through the rad, its very inefficient.

If I left the side panel on the guy wouldn't have seen the rads as requested. but yea cable management for that many fans in such a small case isn't really possible.
