something fried?

I had my PC on, and while I was away something happened. When I got back to the PC there was a loud bang, and the PC seemed to turn off.

I have looked at to the best I can with my limited tools the PSU, GPUs, MOBO, cables, and the HDD. I can't find anything wrong with any of it, and the PC still powers on, and works. I currently have the PC unhooked to further test thing.

I am using smartphone to type this, so I expect there to be some spelling errors.

Update
I bought a SeaSonic Platinum-1000, and everything works great again.

Update 2
New SeaSonic Platinum-1000 PSU appears to be dead today.

Software A lot.
Benchmark Scores Its fast. Enough.
You most likely blew and cap in the PSU, and sent dirty power through the machine.

I had a PSU send sparks out when a cap blew once. It was on a server, I almost crapped myself.

That's what I'm leaning towards. I understand that the model of ThermalTake PSU I have is kinda crappy.

Also, it's best if you don't use your PC until you can replace it, because the voltages can be out of spec eg too high and/or lots of ripple and spikes or it can really go bang this time and take the rest of the PC out with it.

Either use another PC if you have one, or borrow a decent PSU from somewhere if you can. I know it's inconvenient, but this precaution is far better than the alternative.

And make sure that all your important data is backed up - this is the most critical advice of all. Hardware can be replaced, but personal data like photos, emails, personal wordprocessor documents, financial data etc cannot.

I agree that it should not be used. I have removed the PSU, and am now waiting to see if the warrenty wil cover it. I don't have a second PC, and ATM I cant afford to kill this one. I'm not 100% sure how big of a PSU I need, but the one that died is 1kw. I also don't have a spare PSU of any size.

In hindsight I should have known that the PSU was failing when my USB keyboard started turning off while using it.

PS
I have been using my smartphone or Nintendo to post.

I think that 800W would be enough,
here are some options:

http://www.thermaltakeusa.com/Power...Blue/C_00001928/EVO_BLUE_2_0_850W_/design.htm

My cousin have been using it since 2010, she is a casual gammer...

Personally, I would like change my TR2 80+ for this one:

http://www.thermaltakeusa.com/Power...er/C_00002349/Toughpower_850W_GOLD/design.htm

many of my gamer friends have it, pretty solid unit, both of them are made by CWT, (http://www.cwt.com.tw/) , You need to know what you are buying, for many people Thermaltake PSU's are a little overpriced.

Corsair:

HX 750, 850 both made by CWT,

CX 750M seasonic,

Or you can get a Seasonic one,

For now I am borrowing a PSU from a friend. The old PSU is about 1-1/2 years old, so hopefully it will be covered by the "5 year" warranty. It is a Thermaltake SP-1000M.

With my system what size of PSU would it need with one of the GPUs removed? I thought a 600w PSU would handle that, but it ate a spare that was ~6 months old.

I've always disliked thermaltake. The important part is the OEM that makes the insides though. Rosewill, EVGA, seasonic. Those are the ones I've used and trust. Some corsairs are fine, some are junk. Rosewill isn't the best but their capstone/HIVE series are solid. EVGA G2 are some of the best PSUs you can buy. Seasonic is one of the most well known OEMs.

Nah my psu is 2 years old and still kicking. I payed 40$. The 600w will be more than fine for 1 card. A friend of mine uses a similar system as mine, the only difference is he has a MSI 660 TF card on a 500W PSU.

I used one of these for a year in my HTPC (I needed something quick, and it was available locally), and it worked fine. I WAS a little leery though, but it all worked out.

Based on your specs and everything it seems that you do not need much of a PSU to power the machine so you should look at a small good quality one to replace as 1000 is a bit overkill for your rig. If your RMAing and it comes back fine you can always just use it again as it probably is just a bad capacitor or similar in the PSU which does happen. If you want o buy a new one, here is a good suggestion that should keep the cost down:

Cosair CSM550Watt PSU 80+Gold
$59.99 (Using the coupon code with it!)
Its 80+ Gold so its nice and efficient, Corsair is a good brand, 550Watt is plenty for your system and will offer expansion for a higher video card even with that powerful processor, and its not to expensive on top of having a 10 dollar of coupon with it right now.

I'm using a 530w for my i7+660 OC combo (same card as 64k posted) and my max power draw is like.. 300w? Maybe not even that, though you do want headroom.

The PC normally has 2 GTX660s running in SLI, I removed one temporarily for a better chance of finding a temporary PSU. I thought that 600W would be enough, but it my PC killed it. Why I don't know. There may be other things wrong, but I don't know what.

Processor: Intel i7-4930K
Motherboard: Asus P9X79 LE
Cooling: CoolerMaster X6 Elite
Memory: 8x8GB DDR3 1333
Video Card(s): 2x EVGA Nvidia GTX 660
LCD/CRT Model: Asus VG236, VS247
Case: Cooler Master HAF 912
There are also 7 120MM fans
Input is a G13, G500s, G510s, and sometimes a G27. (I can say now I will not buy a Logitech "gaming" keyboard again anytime soon)

PS
I am hoping to upgrade the GTX660s soon. I am thinking about getting two 970s to replace them.

I am going to buy a new PSU, and if the 1kw ThermalTake is warrantied I'll keep it for a spare. I am considering a SeaSonic Platinum-1000 to replace it. Any suggestions?
