I didn't see you mention it, did you remove the cooler, clean it up and apply new paste?

I would do as suggested, but to be honest the card is BRAND new like a week or two old.

I was thinking about upgrading the thermal paste but dubious to the actual gains.

This, from a brand new card is not good. I would think about RMA the card.

My MSI TwinFrozr recycles air back in the case. I would make sure that the airflow through the case is such that the air around the GPU gets moved and moved a lot. If my case fans are low, my reference 6870 does fine because it throws the hot air out the back of the case but the TwinFrozr gets nice and warm because it can't remove the heat from inside the case even through there was plenty of air flow going through my CPU. So I would make sure that air is circulating correctly in your case so all components can breathe, because you can setup fans in a way where air movement doesn't cover most of the chassis.

Also I think I know what 295X2 you're talking about. That has both a radiator and a fan on the card (heat sinks in two places?) so it's entirely possible that airflow in the case is just poor.

How do your CPU temps look fully loaded in comparison? If those temps are high too (but not necessarily too high), it will be a dead giveaway that airflow is to blame.
This, from a brand new card is not good. I would think about RMA the card.
I wouldn't go that far yet. :)

Edit: I should also add that both of my 6870s have absolutely terrible default fan profiles and overheat while gaming under full load unless I use something like MSI Afterburner to specify my own. The defaults had a really weird low curve until right before thermal where it jumps up really high... not quite ideal so I use my own.

AFAIK, there is no way to remove the thermal throttle, it is built into the hardware to prevent it from frying itself.

Toss one of these bad boys on the rad: http://www.newegg.com/global/uk/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835706022

Shame as a stock solution should be able to run at stock speeds perpetually without much issue!

Not according to AMD. Or rather their "stock" speeds are actually the boost speeds. They don't have stock speeds anymore, just boot clocks and once the card starts to overheat the clock speed will drop.

Hi,
just to share with op with regards to throttling ..I live in an ambient temp of about 28-32C and my 295x2s downclock after a few minutes of valley or heaven. Rads are in push pull and exiting air while 3 jetflos pulls air in from the front. 1 jetflo blowing air directly on the back of both cards.
I have to agree to my own conclusion before that each 295x2 needs at least a 360 rad to cool it sufficiently and VRM coolers.
Maybe one dayyy

I've ordered 2 of those fans newtekie, thanks for the feedback everyone.

Bit disappointed that I can only enjoy my graphics card for about 5 minutes in games without issues.

What happens in BF4 is that I'll usually be lining up a shot and then completely miss due to lagging out.

Sorry also someone asked about my CPU temps.

Currently temperatures are (at idle)

CPU (FX8350@4.2Ghz) - 25oC
GPU (R9 295X2) - 43oC

As soon as I hit gaming CPU goes up to about 40-45oC, graphics card spirals up to 75oC and lingers there whilst dropping core speed...

This is not right. That case usually delivers good airflow, so I can't see it being the issue.
Redoing the cooler's thermal paste should not be something that ~you~ have to do just to use your GPU normally. (considering that it's brand new) They may void your warranty if you do that.

Have you talked to the GPU maker's Tech Support about this?

RMA is what I would do if Tech Support doesn't have a solution for you.

Hi,
the 295x2 will reached its thermal limit of 75C around 5 mins of heaven 4.0 or crysis 3 on my rig in a haf stacker and push pull config on the rads. This is at 28-30C ambient.
I feel that each card needs at least a 360mm rad and push-pull fans. it seemed from my readings the cards have a delta of 40-50C with the ref rad, and the only way to make the delta less would be custom loop.
I accepted this fact and have 2 of these running QFire. even with temp throttling I still 60fps at 4k in crysis 3, so I am happy.

Hope you will accept this situation or go full custom.

Cheers.

I have the same problem with single card in many games. Currently experiencing it in RAGE. When i fire up the game it's butter smooth. And then after a while, it just becomes horribly choppy and just plain slow. Changings MSAA from 8x down to 2x doesn't seem to make much difference. And i thought it was thermal throttling at first but considering i used to have fans running at max and temperatures never going anywhere high and i was experiencing the same thing, it must be something else.

@newtekie1 Another good call on the fan's !
Too bad the killer Sanyo Denki San Ace 120mm x 38mm 1011's are hard to get !

I too have read where alot of people [mostly miners] have undervolted many R9's, mostly 290X's to keep temp's lower.
Hopefully the fan's are the ticket !!
Good luck

Which psu are you using? You don't say in your specs; remember that card has "special psu needs".
