What should I upgrade?

So this is everything I have in my computer, It's time for an upgrade


GPU: Nvidia GeForce GT 610
Processor: Pentium(R) Dual-Core CPU e5400 @ 2.70GHZ
Ram: 6 Gigs

I've asked around and i've been told to get a new graphics card first, I have $269 to spend right now.

But I don't know what the Processor and the Graphics Card does good, So Do I upgrade my Processor first or Graphics card? If so what should I get?

It depends what you do with your pc mainly.

From most peoples perspective here the entire system needs to be scrapped. Its just too old and out dated to be worth money upgrading it

What do you use the computer for? What is it not doing that you want it to do?

As others have said, that computer might need to be scrapped. The time to upgrade it has come and gone.

Scrap it completely. You buy a new GPU, your CPU will be a pretty big bottleneck. The opposite will happen if you upgrade the CPU.

Yeah it depends what you need to do on your PC. If gaming is one of them then really you need to start saving up for a new build. If you are just using your PC for internet, emailing and watching videos then stick with what you got.

Edit: What PSU do you have? That could be a limiting factor on a video card upgrade.

Why would I scrap a PC when it works pretty good?

From the looks of it too - im guessing its an OEM machine, Either a Lenovo, CompaQ, HP or DELL etc etc. Ive seen that board on a HP machine my friend used to have

If this is indeed the case then your power supply needs upgrading too as OEMs will rarely give you power supplies that can power anything more then what they leave the factory with. They might be able to handle a ram, hard drive and to a lesser extent a Graphics upgrade but that depends entirely on the graphics card itself. because you cant stick something that draws significantly more power then the previous graphics card thats installed into the PC off the assembly line.


Either tell us what you do with your PC and why you want the upgrade so we can advise you further or just stick with what you got.

If its got you this far, theres no reason why it wont take you further unless something is faulty or you have a dire need for more horsepower to run games

Don't scrap it. Not sure why people keep saying to scrap it when it can be used as

A guest desktop for web browsing.

A new rig is needed, yes. I'm guessing an i5+770 would be a good gaming upgrade. i7+ decent/higher memory is good for workstation programs. It's all up to how you use it.

I dont think a system like that is capable of 'high end' gaming. As for the i7, its all BS you can game perfectly fine on a Intel G3258 once its overclocked some and its so dirt cheap.

I haven't spit that much coffee out during a laugh in a while.

To the OP, a nice i3 will be PERFECTLY fine for ANY GPU, it's hyper threaded, and will hold it's own JUST fine.
However I DO agree with those saying You should not upgrade such a "older" machine, instead, how about saving up your $$ until You have $500-$600? then You could put together a respectable machine, with NO issue's what so ever.

But if You MUST upgrade that machine, I would PERSONALLY do the CPU, simply because a newer GPU will be Bottlenecked pretty bad, but the GPU You have will STILL play the games Your used to....THEN You could make the GPU purchase, and Move up Your expectations for what games Your machine can handle...Seriously though, if You CAN hold off, Do yourself a favor, and Wait.Upgrading a 775 socket machine is like putting a turbo in a chariot.

Yes it will play those games, however you may be better off waiting for the 960's to release if your going to spend 220$ on that 760. imo

I would seriously wait for the GTX 960 (if you can). Waste of money buying any 700 series at this time.

The time to buy 700 series was 2013 till first quarter 2014. I would wait...

What's wrong with 4 rails? As long as you use the correct PCIe connectors, and don't try to put two sets of 6+2 plugs into a GPU from the same connector there is very little danger of exceeding the amp capacity of any given rail. In my main rig I have always had multi-rail setups (although I do have single rail systems in the house, and agree they are simpler to configure), as there is nothing inherently wrong with them.

Are you planning on re-using the Harddrives?
If you are at that budget, let me make an alternative suggestion to you to balance out the budget a bit more:

Case: NZXT Source 210
CPU: i3 4360
Motherboard: Asrock H97M Pro4+
Ram: Gskill Ripjaws 8gb 1600
PSU: Rosewill ARC 550Watt
GPU: Gigabyte R9 280
HDD: WD 1tb 7200RPM
DVD: LG Drive

That is a decent system if starting from scratch at around $650 dollars without including rebates and will do all you have stated and more for quite a long time.
Alternatively you can also swap a few parts around and do something more like this to make it a little faster and if you plan on re-using HDDS (Or if you can).

Either build will suffice your needs where the top one is more about having extra GPU power and the bottom one is a bit more balanced offering up some great GPU performance with a nice SSD upgrade to go with it for load times on the OS and some games. You will not need more than a high clocked i3 for your needs because most of those game are not heavily threaded and the i3 I put starts with nice high clocks out of the box.

My point was really that we shouldn't instill fear in people of parts that might take an extra 30 seconds to set up. It's not exactly rocket science. I was figuring out the splitting of rails back when I knew zero about computers, because I bought one without realizing what I had bought.

But your point is well-taken, you're trying to keep it simple for the OP.
