Pardon the noob question but I have not been able to have google answer for me. I am using the Samsung XP941 (PCIe SSD) as my boot drive on the ASRock X99 Professional motherboard. The OS is Windows 7 Pro and booting into the OS seems to be working okay. I want to add a couple SATA WD Red drives for storage but I want them in RAID 1. I figured the best approach was to reinstall Windows 7. I tried to reinstall windows 7 using the "F6 method." However during the Windows install the process would not recognize the Intel RAID drivers. Similarly I could not get the Intel Rapid Storage Technology to work. It responded with a hardware error when I tried to install the latest IRST. I did change the bios SATA controller mode to RAID before trying the above. What am I missing or am I limited to have these drives only in ACPI? Would a RAID controller card permit to do what I want? Many thanks.

you should't need to reinstall windows if all you want is two platter drives in raid 0
install the intel iRST drivers from your board vendor then
simply connect the two drives to the intel sata ports and then configure the array from the bios interface
**the following should not be necessary but ... **
you may however need to do a bit of registry editing *make sure you export a backup of the key or write down the existing setting incase you need to revert it*

I believe he is doing a re-install because he had to switch the SATA mode from AHCI to RAID in the BIOS, which will usually make Windows not boot unless you do some registry hacks...it is easier for some to just re-install.

The thing is, Windows 7 shouldn't need to load RAID drivers to see the RAID arrays/drives. Even on x99, the standard built in drivers that come with Windows will recognize the Intel RAID controller. If it doesn't your Windows disc might be damaged, you'll have to get/make another. You can download Win7 disc for free from digitalriver.

For some, yes. For some, doing anything in the registry freaks them out.
