i5 2500 is better and yes it will work but check the motherboard manufacture's web site for CPU support and BIOS versions

And be careful of the pins. They bend easily

Pretty much if it's a Z68 it should support SB cpu's like that 2500 right off the bat with initial BIOS. It's Ivy Bridge, that you may need a BIOS revision to run, in which case you'll need that 2500 in there anyway.

I'm just saying the initial revision of all Z68's should support that 2500. So you should be good with that 2500. What is unknown is if that i3 will run without a BIOS update from the manufacturer site, since it's only listed as Rev 2.

But if you are already running the 3220 (which means it's already updated), then you will have no worries at all with the 2500!

the 3470 is a little faster than the 2500, maybe a 5% performance difference between the two at the same clock speed. But the 2500 runs at 100MHz faster speed, so the two CPUs should be very close to the same. I'd get which ever one was less expensive. Either CPU should have no problem with a motherboard that is currently running a i3 3220.

Yeah, like @eidairaman1 said, running your GPU at 3.0 speeds depends on the motherboard, not the CPU, and there isn't much difference between the two. The difference between 2.0 and 3.0 would not become noticeable until you start getting into high-end 3-way/ 4-way SLI/crossfire set-ups.

Actually, 3.0 is CPU-dependant. I'm running 3.0 now on my Z68 with 3770K, and it was 2.0 with the 2600k, same motherboard. The issue was when IVB came out that Z68's needed a BIOS update to make use of 3.0 with the IVB CPU's.

Actually its both, I mean the CPU has to have the controller for 3.0 and the motherboard has to have PCIE 3.0 as well because if you buy a Z77 board that has PCIE 3.0 and mix it with a i7 2600K sandy bridge chip you will only run at 2.0 speeds because of the chip. But as y'all both said there is really no difference except in a scenario where you have 3+ video cards.

Correct. The MB manufacturers of Z68 (and P67) had to build the 3.0 feature into the motherboards ahead of time in order for an IVB to unlock it.

i3 = 2/3 core/Thread Base
i5 = 4/4 core/Thread Base

so ii5 is always better than any i3 either 2nd or 3rd. and i5 2nd is always better to i5 3rd, in the sense you won't get any notcieable perfomrnance if you upgrade to 3rd gen i5 from 2nd. only i7 makes a noticeable difference.

my experience.
i5 2500K @4.8ghz scored 9300 in 3dmark physics whereas i5 3570K @4.8ghz scored 9500 so, 200 isn't what you expecting from any upgrade. and in gaming i never felt any sort of difference between them. i7 2600K @4.8ghz performs greater than both.

Advantage of i5 3rd gen is that you will get maximuum memory bus speed support. like depending on board, you can easily get 2666 to 2800mhz with z77 exreme 6. whereas sandy only 2133 support
