today i got brand new gigabyte gtx 980 gaming 1 card. nothing overclocked by myself. latest drivers, etc., corsair ax860 power supply, ...

it has some strange behavior, not crashing tough

on startup it idles, not getting above 35 degrees, no coil whine.

then suddenly i hear some mild coil whining and when i monitor temps, temps are going up (no background apps opened, nothing runinng, just pure windows desktop), in a few minutes slowly going up from 35 to 57 degrees. fans are not spinning at some constant percentage, but adaptive. aslong as whine continues temps not going down, as whine started - didnt end till i restart it.

what is wrong with my hardware?

is that normal?

Im going to guess that is the difference between 2D idle and 3D idle temps. Also the coil whine usually means the card is under some sort of a powered load state.

if coil whining continues i really dont care, as lot of people are expierancing it, but that strange temperature behavior not going down below 57 on idle when whining a bit terrifying me. as soon as whining ends, temperatures on idle becomes absolutely low.
so is it normal to have this process?

btw, when playing some games - fps is awesome, nothing crashes. so i am avoiding to say is faulty one, am i right?

Most likely its like the above member said and is just under some load at times (Likely 3D) which GPU's can change into depending on what is running in the background. I would not worry as the card seems to be handling everything just fine with the only real issue being the common "Coil Whine" problem. Other than that I would not worry as it seems to be just acting normal as can be expected. But you can RMA for coil whine if that starts to really bug you.

But your card seems to be fine to me.

ok thanks. coil whine actually doesnt bother me at all, as i like my system to be loud. the thing that bothers me is the temps. is it normal to have 57degrees (constant 57, no changes) celsuius that high temperature (paralel coil whining) just for using google chrome? i might be asking this question several times for this thread, so if you already answered me, can you explain deeper?
when i play some new game temps not going above 70 degrees.

here is the screenshot of GPU. almost constantly, no changes, no fan speed increase etc. AND THAT IS IDLEING! maybe somethings wrong with the latest driver?

I think what maybe the issue is that Chrome has hardware acceleration on which is causing the GPU to jump out of low power/clock state and boost up causing the higher temps. My advice on that would be to check chrome and disable the GPU acceleration to see if that helps. But it sounds normal to me because the GPU is leaving its low state and jumping into normal mode which causes temps to go up.

Oh I thought in that last post you were saying it was specifically in Chrome which is why I thought that. Most likely though something is just kicking it out of low power though like I said because if temps were an issue it would be overheating while gaming which as you said its working fine. I cannot tell you for sure whats causing it but I would just check the programs you have running in the background to see what maybe kicking it up. Your screenshot shows the problem is definitely just the GPU being forced into its boost state which is causing the higher than normal temps because its also showing a 93% usage on the chart.

as i really want to figure this out or maybe just return the card back to store i bought it. i find it really strange... here is the chart of processes running in background. anything suspicios? or should i just simply reinstall the whole OS?

WHAT THE F*CK. i have never installed steam.exe, so what is this. i just clickefd to end process and suddenly coil whine stopped and gpu usae is at low 0. what was that?
I was about to say it was either between chrome or steam as everything else seems normal. Are you sure you did not install the steam client for games on your machine even for one or two games. Odd that it is causing that but if your not using it I would just uninstall it and not worry though I cannot imagine what on the program was causing the card to be under that much load.

Wow I had not been paying attention to bitcoin malware for awhile now but had not even considered it. So it seems like you may have caught a virus on your machine while installing something and that has been causing your GPU to spike. Try Avira or a similar free antivirus program to see if it can get rid of it would be my suggestion and if worst comes to worst you can always do a clean install though that's an extreme scenario.

Even if you get an AV program get Malwarebytes free edition and run it often. It does a really good job sweeping the nasties out of your system.

No problem, just make sure to do a complete format and not just a reinstall as otherwise it may just transfer over. If you want an easy antivirus that works and just not have to worry just get the basic Windows Defender as it just runs as part of windows and should at least help while not causing problems.

well ... this will be your bane

just get the basic Windows Defender as it just runs as part of windows and should at least help while not causing problems.
i am on the opposite ... i don't trust that one ...

i use AVAST on all my rigs (even my smartphone and tablet) the free version since it started and never had to complain about it.
a friend got the same issue and he didn't had any antivirus... so hum ... unless on a linux rig i would not bypass AVAST

My card initially whined and it is a 290 under load. It went away. Their aint no guarantee if you replace the card or psu the next wont whine. All you can do is deal with it.

I feel this thread is going to turn into an AV debate now.
i don't see why ... not having one is just like f* wait ... nope i will not make a parallel between having a PC connected to the net without AV and something involving a STD infection and condoms ... oh ... too late ...
and i did choose AVAST because it's the less annoying or gas factory of all i tried  (once in silent mode ofc ... the famous "AVAST Virus database has been updated" can be quite annoying ... specially with a headset and the volume cranked up :D )

ah damn i will turn this thread into a STD debate now ... just my luck ...

Ha! HELLO. I have Asus Strix 980 and my problem is a little similiar to your problem.
Listen.
My graphic card is Asus Strix 980 and Psu Corsair 750RM. But i have a problem.
I can play 24 hours without buzzing noise. Everything is fine when i am playing. But when i close game and then ( on idle ) after couple of seconds i can hear a buzzing noise coming from i think GPU. When fan slowly goes from RPM 50% to 0% and on 0% i can hear buzzing noise. Noise goes away after 1-2 second.Sorry for my bad english. Its something bad with card then?
Generally after I've played a game it seems to start making noise, so as soon as I've shut down the game the noise starts ( on idle ).Noise goes away after 1-2 second

Its kinda sound like this:
