Interesting little hackable device. Designed to be inexpensive (which shows), but somewhat feature-rich (GPIO is pretty neat). Fun to play with if you've got a few bucks to spare. They're neat little media players (XBMC) or Linux desktops (Rasbian). As others have said, there are other options out there that may or may not be better value (depending on the application). I've spent more than I thought I would on mine since it needs a microSD card for storage, USB power source, case (optionally), heatsinks if you want to overclock it, etc.

Some people even use them for cluster computing, although I'm not entirely sure why. Probably just because they can.

I got one for 1st semester of my final year for an assignment, create a lift simulator which is programmed under python. The pi handles the program which sends the instructions into Arduino board which displays the outcome.

I always wanted to buy one. But for $150 USD it will have to wait.

But I can say it is not a s**t. And I do not even own one (yet).

blows the pi out of the water
ODROID-XU3 Lite
Is a 8 core monster with a equally monstrous mali 628 gpu

Already seen these one, but I think that the Raspberry has a bigger community to help, easier setup I guess..

I own a Raspberry B+ running raspbmc, which is doing the job very good. Quite easy to install, there is not really configuration to do.

That ODROID is quite nice at 35$, the quad core 1.5ghz, could run a small Ubuntu, and run Kodi. Raspberry is just easy for "starter".

I want this ODROID C1, which is like 35$. It will be better for my Media Center in the living room, keeping the raspberry for the basement or VoIP

the odroid comes presetup just plug and play
personally I would spring for either the u3 or the xu3
id go whole hog and go for the xu3 you aren't gonna beat that perform ace/form-factor ratio
and it will breeze though any media task you could throw at it

"Note!!The package includes a XU3 Lite board, a plastic case, an active cooler and 5V/4A PSU. You need additional MicroSD card or an eMMC module to install the OS. We strongly recommend the eMMC module for much higher performance boosting."

http://hardkernel.com/main/products/prdt_info.php?g_code=G140471342523

40$ + the eMMC, and it is linux, you still need to do all the config for anything. it is not like Raspbmc which boot directly to xbmc. you can have a starter kit with SD, case, power cable, board, HDMi cable, for like 65$. still half of the price.

Yes, the performance is not the same, but I tried running 5gb mkv file, raspberry is doing it. running CPU 100%, but it plays well (note that the interface with mouse after is slower, but I use my cellphone as remote)

The thing I hate from XU3 is the active cooling. I prefer Passive xD

if you are already using a hdd for media storage just partition it and install linux/android there and then install uboot to the SDCARD to boot from the HDD http://forum.odroid.com/viewtopic.php?f=112&t=8075
http://archlinuxarm.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=47&t=6874
granted this approach takes little bit of effort

raspbmc is linux btw
you can always install openelec witch is what rasbmc is based on
http://openelec.tv/
also there is a difference between playing a >5GB Mkv and PLAYING IT RIGHT

I didn't said that the RPI is better, Just that you have a community behind which is very large, plus, the RPI is just soo easy for starter.. and No HDD is being used, I have a server which share files to my RPi, so only an SD card to boot the OS, and that's it. but I will wait for official build for ODROID openelec which seems to be a WIP (this will surely be a RPi killer soon) (and I won't use android, prefer having to boot direct to Kodi, or having Ubuntu if doing something else with it.)

Who said it wasn't playing it right? I watched the video, and it was without any issue.. anyway...

The RPi will not be "killed" since an entire UK based edu program is wrapped around it. The other hardware will go a route similar to Arduino etc., great for makers who already know what they are doing and so on but for a different, smaller(?) market.

I feel sorry for the UK childern then the RPi is a under powered pile of poo
granted its 35 bucks but it has no ram to speak of,the cpu is basically useless the only hafway usefull bit is the GPIO and the videocore "gpu"
RBi brought these mini ARM devboards into mainstream focus other then that they didn't do anything usefull

It is not for making Powerpoints or 25+ pages long Word documents. It is primarily aimed at coding and messing around with GPIO ports and robotics. They seems more capable than the Pentium II systems with <64MB RAM and NT 4 used in HS by me (on which also those Powerpoint and large docs had to be written). Oh, and relative cost is a thing too. SBCs are kind of pricey.

you can do far better for the price tho
the c1 is a quad core with double the ram a better gpu and supports everything the pi does
and it costs the same

Benchmark Scores bench...mark? i do leave mark on bench sometime, to remember which one is the most comfortable. :o
well ... the Rpi SOC is outdated which lead me to be astonished of the community around it ... as i said on another thread its a ARMv6 core while all the concurent are on ARMv7/v8
for having played with Rpi B/Beaglebone Black/Minnowboard/Radxa Rock Pro and a Jetson dev board .... the Pi is the bottom of the list (even comparing price/features range)
the only thing that save a Pi is: Arduino compatibility and Videocore IV GPU the cons : outdated ARM instruction set, SDR RAM, no onboard memory, generic lack of power.

if you have less than 40$ and want something to thinker with the Rpi is a good device (or if you have more and want to do a cluster ... altho a single O UX3 is worth quite a bunch of Pi in term of computing power) if you have more than 40$ you might want to get a Beaglebone Black, above there is many good option to fill the spot and not the HDMI stick ... if i want a Rokchip device i rather take a Radxa Rock Pro with a RK3188 than a MK808 with a RK3066

Radxa Rock Pro ok cost 70chf more than a B+ but it come with all needed to run it out of the box and also a plexi case + integrated wifi + antenna

Note though how the concurrence has sharpened up after the Pi. I think it has triggered something.

Any suggestions on what is the least expensive, yet most compute capable device that runs Android would be? I'm guessing just about anything with good build quality running the RK3188 chipset (which is why I was eyeballing the MK809iv).

Benchmark Scores bench...mark? i do leave mark on bench sometime, to remember which one is the most comfortable. :o
Any suggestions on what is the least expensive, yet most compute capable device that runs Android would be? I'm guessing just about anything with good build quality running the RK3188 chipset (which is why I was eyeballing the MK809iv).
well with a RK3188 you have the Radxa Rock Pro where i am it's 109.90chf (around 126.54$ ) it pack quite a lot of feature for the price tho, look my 1st post in the thread.

I'm surprised that no one brought up the Hummingboard.
http://www.solid-run.com/products/hummingboard/linux-sbc-specifications/

It has mSATA, PCI-E mini slot, and a real 1Gbps ethernet port which are some very nice selling points. It's still just a dual-core and 100 USD though for the top-end model.

Raspberry Pi.

I always wanted to buy one. But for $150 USD it will have to wait.

But I can say it is not a s**t. And I do not even own one (yet).
Not sure why it's expensive where ever you live. It's 35 USD or 40 after shipping here in the US.

Maybe he includes stuff like SD cards, a case, HDMI>DVI/D-sub15 adapter and then it can add up.

which in the end make the Pi not so cheap ... it cost same as the concurrent, once packed with what they already offer.
well lucky the Arduino compatibility is here ... even the Radxa Rock Pro has a good GPIO (40pin~ iirc)

my PI b+ is going in my old broken NES to run some emulator goodness. Thinking of running retroPie on it. Haven't hooked it all up yet, waiting on a pair of original NES controllers. Been looking into reading real NES carts with it. There's lots of info on the SNES but not so much the NES. Whilst playing from ROMS is all well and good, i want to plug my actual carts in :).

Also on the price got mine for £25 quid, can;t understand why its so expensive for you guys?

Ordered my Pi B+ a few days ago, will do some major tinkering! Looking forward to it, learning Linux, and finally doing something useful with Python.
Spent 50 Pounds on it, including a case, charger, SD card, Wi-Fi dongle, HDMI cable, heatsinks and HDMI-DVI adapter.
