When did that happen.
Most people use a 24" monitor @ 1080p.
In the corporate world I believe many still use 19'' @ 1366x768 or 21" @ 1600x900 or @1080p
I dont know anybody that has anything bigger than 24" monitor.
TV's are different because you dont watch them from that close.

I have two 27" 1080P and a 28" 4K screen in the PC room, but a 24" on my Dell's Docking station.

I would but only if it is 4K. 1920x1080, no, because the dot pitch is too large.

There comes a point when the monitor is so large that you have to move your head to see it all. That will be the maximum. For me, that is 30". Anything bigger than that and I have to move my head to focus on parts of the monitor and using it for extended periods of time hurts my neck.

Neck hurts due to exercise, i been using a 40" for about 3 years now and every time i see a smaller screen i always think it's too small never mind games look better on a large ass screen.

Although i use a TrackIR too which that head movement you have a issue with good with one of those as it allows you to look around the cockpit for example.

I would hate to go to a small screen now got so used to a large screen see so much more too and awesome to spot those tango's hiding were everyone else is either wondering what it is or not even see them.

In the end it's each to their own.

Doubtful, most gamers still prefer small monitors in the range of 20-28inches and that probably will stay the same even if resolution increases dramatically. Reasons monitors sizes have gone up compared to the past is because the price of increased size monitors was extreme up until the last 7 years roughly where gamers have now gotten a wider variety of options more suitable to their budgets and preferences. Essentially some people like to and will play on very large monitors/T.V.'s up to 50+ inches but generally if a screen is to big from a short distance its not only bad for your eyes its also harder to play on because you have to look around a lot.

So I do not think we will ever hit a point where a 42inch is the normal gaming monitor for the majority of users. I don't think I will ever do anything bigger than 28inches and even that is a bit big for my taste.

Bad for your eye's straining on some thing you cannot see well enough too.

I offered a 27" ASUS to my wife for her office and she refused it. She has a 23" ViewSonic IPS screen that she loves.

I'm using 32" since lots of years, on my desk. First at basic TV, now a 32" Benq 2500x1400 and it is jummy. Higher resolution is cool, bring it. Size of 32" on a desktop is close to maximum. Maybe 34" :p

I use a Samsung 40" Full-HD TV as monitor and it works great - even in games.
I am a wantzing a LG 55" 4K TV as monitor now since the current one is getting small in my eyes.

I use a 1080p 46" from 1 foot away.

works perfectly - quality of the screen matters a lot, i couldnt do this with the other two TV's in the house (40" 768p and 32" 1080p - both look terrible up this close in comparison)

Why are people so stuck on acting like PC gamers needs to be stuck sitting 3 feet from a screen, crunched into a desk?
People, get with the times already.
The dark age of PC gaming is over..
Try what I do.
Get yourself a 50" 4k TV, a nice couch and sit yourself down like a king. ;)
I sit 8 feet away, kissing monitors doesn't do it for me.

Depends on the games I think.

If I'm playing competitive games that require precision (think of CS, BF or MOBA), I can't help but sticking my face near screen.
For sightseeing games (think of easier/more manageable games like Skyrim, Elite Dangerous or GTA), I'm okay with 6-7 feet away.

That based on playing with 32" 1080p from about 2 feet away.
Standing still, it's horrible to look at due to big pixel, but it's okay when you're actually gaming.

Other factor is real estate.

Well, it's not about games in general, but about the type of games you prefer to play. I'm pretty sure the majority of so called "opposers" of TV-instead-of-the-monitor have tried to play their favorite games on large TV, yet it did not work well for all of them.
When 1080p TVs just got cheap enough for me to purchase, that was the first thing I did. While slashers and racing games feel excellent on 42" TV, FPS games or MMOs absolutely do not. At some point I had to move my PS3 to my ACER 23" screen and hook it up next to my PC, solder an analog hookup for speakers and pair it with wireless KB/mouse, so I can play shooters like a normal person.

I really enjoy my 27" 1440p monitor. I sit about two feet from it. Probably when I go to 4K in a few years I will get a 30" or 32". Whatever is standard.

EDIT screens are getting bigger because they are getting cheaper.

e.g in the UK 3 years ago you would pay about £10 to £ 11 per inch now you pay £ 6 to £ 7 per inch.

Bigger isnt necessarily better but is getting increasingly cheaper

My simple answer is no. As with many things, the reality is more complex.

Pushing for a bigger screen, in and of itself, it stupid. If you'd like proof positive of that, research DLP televisions at 60" sizes. Those suckers existed for standard definition TV feeds, and looked terrible from anything but 10' away. Likewise, utilizing a 42" television at 1080p resolution is just fugly (for text, standard video and gaming is very acceptable). I can't read anything unless it's in huge print, and then you're giving up functionality for just being bigger.

Right now, 1080p at 24-27" is nice. It hits both a reasonable pricing and decent fidelity. If you double that size, then you quadruple the surface area. This means that for the same fidelity you need 4x the pixel count. As 4k isn't exactly mainstream, you're stuck with either spreadsheets or poorer performance (pushing that many pixels, with any post processing, is beyond the ability of even the most capable GPU out there).

By the time 4k at 42" is a standard, 4k at 24-27" will have been reasonably priced for months. People will then demand the same fidelity, which 42" will not be able to deliver. The cycle starts again, and will only be broken when the pixel density from one generation of display is indistinguishable from the next (looking at you Apple tablets). At that point, increases in size will be the only way to utilize those extra pixels. That won't happen with 4k, and only time will tell about its successor.

24 inches would be fine for me. It's a big monitor, but it's not T.V big, so it's perfect.

I use multiple sizes and have changed over the years, mostly as technology evolved. I think it also really depends on what you do with it. Heavy reading vs coding vs graphics vs games, etc.
I code and do some graphics work. play games, watch movies. My minimum size to do any real work is 23", gaming is 27"
Daily I use those two on one desk, roughly 2.5ft(70cm) away. There's also the htpc which is used as such, on a 42" screen at a minimum of 4-5ft(1.25m) away.
