Can someone please confirm to me that my HD 5850 will not benefit from installing Omega.

I understand it is designed for R series and APU has anyone seen any gains running it on earlier cards.

Hi

Can someone please confirm to me that my HD 5850 will not benefit from installing Omega.
Most if not all unified code will have been optimised to the max for the 5800 series cards by now, unless having issues with newer release of applications / games there is little reason to updating to Omega drivers

there is also the omega chipset driver and amd says its the most tested driver in the history of the company.. may be more application specific like said but it may end up being a little smoother experience

Your 5850 will not benefit from any recent driver updates, the chipset updates are good tho if you have an AMD motherboard

yeah my thought was the omega chipset driver is probably better than any other especially over the one that comes with windows

Not worth it updating.

I ran my 5870 on the 13.2 drivers and it run just fine, with anything newer probably won't help with performance.

My 6950s didn't care for the Omega drivers either. I'm too lazy to roll back though. I suppose I should get off my duff and do it now.

Im on the 13.2 driver as well. I tried more recent ones (the last was 14.2*). but went back, that was months ago now, cant remember why.

I wont bother with Omega then. Thanks for your help everyone.

every new driver has updated game profiles for single, and crossfire enhancements.

New games require new profiles.

Got it thankyou.

its just time to upgrade if you play any of the aaa games they optimize for.. 270x is a great budget card or you might be able to find someone selling a 7850+ that wasnt used for bit coin

i dont think the 7850 would be much of an upgrade for me from a HD 5850 or are you thinking of it from an optimization and support point of view ?

i was just thinking optimization.. 7850 falls under the strongest r7's with the re-branding but your right if your going to get something it should be noticeably stronger to be worth your money

Too close to call
GPU Boss is nice for comparing tech specs of two cards, but as far as I can tell, their numbering system has always been completely off. I very much like Anandtech's Bench section for this. Compare a 5870 to a 7870 with real benchmarks and the 7870 absolutely knocks it out of the park. The 7870 is consistently 50-100% better and that's "Too close to call"?

http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/gaming-graphics-card-review,3107-7.html

toms makes a pretty decent chart.. a 270x is a overclocked 7870. 7900 cards have more shaders and stream processors like the 280(x) and is the same deal with the clocks so if you can find one someone is selling in good shape with a good price you probably cant go wrong. i get worried about used hardware but i know a lot of people just are not like me:)

Thanks for that excellent info.
As ever its best to check more that one source.

I honestly didnt think there would be that much difference but then again its 2 generations down the road.

Do you think its the same comparable difference for 5850 and 7850 the cards you refer to are 70's

I didn't either, but I started looking at upgrades for my 6950s and was a bit surprised. The jump between the 5870 and 6970 isn't too large in most cases, but the 7000 series made some real advances.
I really like GPU Boss, but some of their comparisons are just.. odd.

one of the funniest things i seen was on cpu boss with power consumption.. was like a i7 4770 vs a fx 9590 showing exactly the same.. 80w.. 200w.. close enough i guess haha

definitely! the ps4 and xb1 have a custom amd jaguar apu with gcn that falls in the area of the 7850-7870.

will be awesome to see what they come up with for the next game systems.. hopefully 4k capable.

I dont care about the current consoles, much less the future ones and if console gamers are dull enough to buy another console in the next 3 or 4 years it just adds weight to the pro pc argument.

For what i do my next upgrade wont even involve DDR4 but then again i am a Luddite .
definition http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=luddite

It will however have a hint of Intel and a smidgen of AMD

i gotcha.. i like to know the hardware that the consoles pack because it will set the stage for entry level gpu's in aaa games.

my personal pc is a fx 6350 and a hd 7850 so it was nice to see my gpu fall in that area.

cant go wrong with a intel cpu and amd gpu so you can give the 2 best companies support ;)

yeah you dont need to get a x99 with ddr4.. the x99 platform is really designed for like editing, rendering etc...

zen(amd) skylake(intel) will be drr4 platforms that will have gamers in mind..
