I might actually try it out now... If I get enough money to buy the base game that is.
Agreed. It takes some of the sting out - however there must be some more fine print about what you are limited to. LOTRO's looked great at the start, but then they got clever and gimped people.
I am curious how much the game will be sold for. There must be a sales plan here with the mindset that all the transactions from the game copy will recuperate losses or missed subscriptions since the game's launch. It won't cancel it out, though it'll certainly be money they wouldn't have gotten otherwise.
guild wars 2 has the right idea. sell cosmetic crap for toons that's just for looks and xp boosters or whatever. no one is locked out off anything and no pay to win bs
Just had this same conversation the other night with someone. We both agreed that it had the best 'f2p' model that we were aware of. Let all the socialites and online whackos blow their money on virtual fluff, because sadly, people will do that. Meanwhile leave the rest of us to simply playing without penalty or limits.
I played GW2 for several months last year and you could buy almost anything at the Black Lion Trading Company even Legendary weapons which were the most powerful weapons in the game. Granted you would have to spend $400 to $500 buying gems to convert to gold to be able to buy a Legendary and the weapons were only about 10% more powerful than Exotics. I wouldn't go so far as to call it pay to win but the game was definitely geared towards giving an edge to those that would spend cash for gems. You could get the gold by farming though and eventually be able to craft a Legendary weapon by putting a lot of time into the game.
That only matters for human vs human pvp style game play. Guild Wars 2 had a surprising amount of PVE content where having these weapons won't be a problem for any content balancing.
MMO developers have to realize that unless you break the mold and or you recreate some classic like EverQuest, you need an angle to stay relevant (forget competitive...). A game that allows pay to win and has limited content will never survive more than a few years.
TERA is another one I think has a good system. I have yet to find where I've been affected by being a 'freebie.'
Any ways, enough talk - I need to go play Dragon Age Inquisition some more, so I can then turn it off and play Skyrim instead.
