no, honestly, im not kidding, iwill let you judge who's the higher source ;)

So PT, are you going to reveal your so called higher source? Or have you signed an NDA?

If it is sabotage, then the reputation of DailyTech is at stake here.

I was thinking more along the lines of peeps ziplining into the test facility in the dead of night and stealthily cutting shader lines or summit to that effect :p

The first article stated that the comparison between the 2900XT and the 8800GTS used release candidate drivers. The second article stated that they then used the retail drivers released to ATI's hardware partners, which is pretty much the final product.

I was going to point out this, but they make forgot to mention how every new card that comes out needs to have their drivers "mature" a little. The first ones out usually are crap. The company has to send drivers to the OEM's so they can start presssing CD's to include with the retail packages, and that takes some time. When the "release candidate" drivers are put out, they will show the true power of the card.

Well, you're correct in that regard. There is usually a software life cycle which can be between a few months to a year, where drivers or software are reviewed and "optimized" to remove certain bugs or introduce performance improvements.

But if you carefully look at the numbers, the differences are quite significant, driver tweaks normally only add a few points increase, which is still a long way from the competitions numbers.

I am hoping this is a defective sample, and not reflective of the final product.

Im hoping its a defective sample or a misnomer ::Rofl:: Perhaps ATI is truly playing their hand wisely, crippling it before it gets to review sites. Perhaps its a HD 2900XT overclocked going against the 8800GTX, if so, it spars well. We wont really know for sure until its really released. Also, driver improvements dont add much to bench marks. Ill wait for final release before judging anything. Remember, the 8800 series had a similar problem when compared to current 7900GTX and the x1950XTX as well, though not as bad.

Yes Zalmann time will tell. But like most folks on here, I will be pissed if this wait didnt produce a card ON PAR with the 8800GTX. Im not looking for it to crush Nvidia, though it would be nice. Id just like the card to spar with it evenly and ahead on a few if it can. Perhaps the unified shader architecture (Stream processors) work in Nvidia's favor.

@WarEagleAU

I agree with you there mate. I'd like to see it be at least competitive, so at least there is an alternative for people to choose from. I'd hate to see ATI/AMD fail, can you imagine a world dominated by Intel/NVIDIA only?

I would hate to NOT have a choice. I have nothing against Intel/NVIDIA.

Well, I don't think a reputable IT news website will publish crap outside of April 1st. As journalists, I doubt they will sign NDA's like thier (ATI's) hardware partners would. Why would you supply hardware to a journo, then tell them they can't publish anything about it??? Your point does not make sense to me.

sign an nda that expires on the launch date .. so every journalist can prepare a full article .. otherwise everybody would post stuff as fast as possible and quality would suck

Well, in this case, from what I heard, it's AnandTech that signed the NDA. Even though DailyTech is affiliated with AnandTech, they are legally two separate companies, and DailyTech is reported not have signed an NDA with ATI, which is the reason why DailyTech can release benchmarks without fear of legal action.

Benchmark Scores Fast. I don't need epeen.
I find it difficult do take these numbers seriously given the amount of BS thats around regarding the R600. Not to mention how to we know dailytech didnt aquire these results from another source, theres that to it as well.

is everyone forgetting about the NDA?, i find this a bit hard to believe...

But if you read it you'll realise that DailyTech received a version of the card being given to board partners - it probably wasn't given straight to them. Therefore, DailyTech hasn't signed an NDA, so whoever they got the card from is who AMD will be looking for. But because the serial number has been covered, they could have quite a task finding them.

Its just a bit ludicrous considering the hype. Ill take these numbers with a grain of salt and Ill take a gander at this thread. Fanboism aside, quality products are made and this wait better be worth it, otherwise, ATI will have a major problem on their hands.

Software A lot.
Benchmark Scores Its fast. Enough.
If we remember what happened with the X1K series, everyone kept pointing out that the 7800GTX was king.

With the right drivers I scored as much as TWO 7800GTX's in SLI.
