Capacitors broken on MB

I have an Asus P5N32 Premium MB that one or more capacitors have broken, one completely off. This is not a warranty item and needs repair. I was wondering if anyone has ever replaced capacitors on MB and could give some info on how to. I'm insane enough to try it. Where to purchase replacement capacitor and soldering techniques, etc. If Asus repaired it would probably cost near as much as the board. Or if I could find an independent to repair, what would cost be?

if your good at soldering you could look at the numbers on the capacitor and go hit up radioshack see if they have anything like it..

Here's a better idea, return the board for a new one, claiming Dead On Arrival, or it broke under normal use. Unless, of course, you broke the capacitors off yourself. If you did that, start saving up for a new motherboard :p.

You people are so against pirated software yet you would steal a mobo!

I agree with athlon on that one, just solder it back! i did that with my 9200, and it works fine! (yes yes i know it's a lame ass graphics card)

well imo it's the same as stealing! if it's your fault then yeah, you f*cked up your mobo and you says it was DOA then it's a flat out lie and it's just like stealing it!

do what ya gotta do but i wouldn't do it unless it was an ABSOLUTELY necessary to get your comp fixed :|

Replacing the caps are not as simple as you think. You'll need to take care in removing them, as motherboards are multi layered devices, meaning they have tracks on the outside (on the top and bottom of the board), and also tracks beneath these, so a total of 4 for a normal motherboard. If you aren't able to remove most of the solder, or apply enough heat, you will damage some of the track layers where the capacitor pins are.

In a nutshell, just be aware that the motherboard is made up of more than 2 layers of track, and don't try and force the cap out when it's not ready.

Take it to a qualified repair place, like TV repair. They can do that job in about 20 seconds. You don't want to mess around with soldering on a motherboard, unless you are seasoned in electronics repair.

thas good advice. its not terribly dificult to do yurself... pull GENTLY while hitting it with a slder iron, it should wiggle loose.

LOL sounds like such a contradiction
"direct the capacitor slowly and carefully while haphazardly tearing it free of the motherboard by smashing it with a sledgehammer."
