Out of touch need advice on upgrade

I'm used to be very active TPU member and keep up with the tech now i'm out of touch and need a little bit of help.

1. Whats the most powerful (single) GPU I can buy for my mobo/cpu?
2. Is there a new GPU coming out worth waiting?
3. Should I upgrade my system? im having the itch to rebuild.

2. AMD 380/380X is coming Q2, so sometime after march, but no official word on the top end 390/390X yet. Spec's for the 380 look exciting, could be very good price/performance at the expense of heat and power. Nvidia's next release is the Titan X, but it will probably be a expensive developer card.
3. Probably not, do you have a good cpu cooler and overclock on the 2600K?

got water cooled system running @ 4.6ghz, built it around 2-3 years ago im amazed still capable

on a side note: 970 is almost 80% cheaper and only 15-20% slower. so is much better bang for your buck. (I think it has power almost like 3x580)

There hasn't been any drastic improvements in CPU performance since your 2600k was new. Clock for clock, the modern equivalent to your 2600k (aka 4790K) is only about 10-15% faster than your 2600k. Plus the 2600k is still faster than any AMD CPU.

+1 for the GTX 970, its more than enough for 1080p currently. and looking at the system that would be the only upgrade that can be justified

What i do is i keep only my OS on the SSD (and BF4) and the rest is on a HDD. SSD only helps with loading times and the only game that I have had with long loading times has been BF4

Both are fine choices. I don't see the new SSD making much difference in your life, other than the increased storage capacity. The new vid card will definitely make a difference.

1. You can have any GPU that you want with your specs. The GTX 980 is the best right now and I like the Asus Strix also. It would be a heck of a nice upgrade from what you have now and would open the door to a 1440p monitor if you wanted one.
2. If you're going to stick with 1080p or 1440p for a while then the GTX 980 is plenty.
3. That overclocked i7 2600k is plenty for gaming. If you want to upgrade just to scratch that itch then wait for Skylake later this year. I would just keep the Intel 510 and use it for the OS and a few games but you definitely could use a HDD to store your games on. I would recommend adding a 2 TB HDD like this

Games are getting pretty big as far as storage requirements.

My 24" starting to flicker, still works but i have a feeling its end of it life

Do you want an ips panel, fast response time, height adjustable, gsync? For gaming best is to get a gsync screen in pair with that 980 but those cost about 3 times as much as a normal screen and it has a TN panel.

@peche I only see the 120 GB Intel 510 SSD in his specs that's why I suggested a 2 TB HDD for games.

I like Asus monitors. I would suggest this for $125 as a good 1080p 23.6" gaming monitor

One thing to consider though if you are going to stick with 1080p for a while is that you can pick up an Asus Strix 970 for $200 less than the 980 and it will still be plenty for 1080p. Here's the review if you want to have a look

this rig is only for gaming, I have separate daily driver rig and a server for movies

In all honesty without reading any of the other comments, i suggest waiting for skylake to release this fall and upgrade then since its going to be a 14nm fab and DDR4 being the new "standard".

Edit: looks like they want to bring it before the new school year starts. Though that might only be for laptops/tablets.

If you can find a sweet deal on a R9 290 OC from Sapphire then it runs head to head with the GFX 970, and in higher resolutions it takes Nvidia down, but it comes with a price of higher power comsumption(not much, but still). I have that GFX and it has never been above 77 degrees cencious and its whisper quiet(mabye I got lucky, who knows).

If not then Nvidia GFX 970 is the way to go, as of today.
