So i'm really looking into buying a new graphics card, but i dont really know if it's compatible with one another(with the power supply)... The problem here is, that i see only one 8pin power connector coming from my power supply. That 8pin connector is connected to the motherboard somewhere... But there is only one. I'd need the second one to put in the 970... So i wonder if i can do it, or do i need to buy a new power supply, or if there's something im missing...

Thanks! :)

Yeah that is a completely different 8 pin than what you require. You can get Molex adapters that can fix it for you. In fact you may find the card actually comes with the adapter. This is not the "best" solution but it is a solution.

I haven't heard of a modern 600 watt PSU that didn't have a 8 pin or 6+2 pin PCIe power connector on it. How old is this PSU? Can you take a pic of the connectors and post it here?

I won't use that PSU for an SLI…does it is 80+ Certified at least ?
using molex adapter for PSUs it's not something that I would trust, its better for you get a 80+ Certified PSU and SLi / CrossfireX certified also a PSU 700W 80+ Certified would be enough actually,

There are plenty options like Seasonic, Thermaltake, corsair, and enermax for example, but always look for high level certification like 80+Gold or Silver for example, 80+Bronze are good option too if you don't have the enough money

I'm so poor so I have a 80+Bronze unit that works flawless:peace:

According to the specs I found on the PSU, it should have a 6-pin PCI-E power connector and a 6+2-Pin PCI-E power connector. The 6+2 connector is the one you need. Since this isn't a modular power supply, either the extra cables you need are tucked away somewhere or someone cut them off.

dude he would need 2x:
PCIe 6Pnis & 6+2Pnis conector for each card, Asus Direct CUII and Strix or atleast 2x6pins PCIe conector for each card...

Before buying the 970 , check out this thread http://www.techpowerup.com/forums/t...s-video-memory-usage-to-3-3-gb-report.209205/ and yes , a tier 2 or maybe even a tier 3 psu , 600 W , should do . My CoolerMaster Silent Pro M600 never gave me problems with any card i had , regardless of being a GTX295 ( dual gpu 289 W TDP ) , a HD5870 or even this R9-280 i'm running atm .

The ASUS 979 Strix has a single 8-pin. And most of the other 970s on the market are either two 6-pins or a 6-pin and an 8-Pin. All combinations his PSU can handle. The only 970s with dual 8-Pins are the stupidly over the top cards.

Also, why are you talking about SLI? He is only getting a single card.

I guess that the "pair" term created a bit of confusion here . GTX970 max power consumption is 145 W . So , yes , if he has the right cables , will do . Even SLI , if his PSU is a 600 W 80+ . If this is your psu http://www.lc-power.de/index.php?id=488 , well , that's an office series , i doubt about the 80+ certification .

This PSU is very common in Europe. Believe it or not I never saw a corsair PSU for sale in my country. When I bought my PSU there was not even a option to go for a 80+ PSU and the most stores were recommending the LC-Power LC600H-12 PSU since it's 600W and cheap and most systems would run on it.

The OP never said he will use 2 cards in SLI, the word pair means he would use the new 970 card with his older PSU and I think that is fine. It will work just fine. The PSU is far away from best quality but it's not some no name brand like many had back in the day and had 0 problems with it.

Yeah, the PSU should work fine. It is 80+ Certified too. It isn't the best option, but not bad either.

Try it , then . I would wait until the 970 memory problems will be fixed , tho .

The debate about these would be too complex for this thread . Corsair psus are just rebranded Seasonics , Flextronics , CWT . As for stores , their target is too sell as much as possible . I wouldn't trust my system running that power supply , no offense please . As for the 600 W , i've seen a lot of 30 E power supplies that were unable to provide more than 435 W and also one must keep in mind that a bad psu can damage the mobo and not only . It's up to anyone , but i am too poor to buy cheap products .

My mistake... i got confused by the term "Pair"....
GTX 970 Reference Card uses 2 6Pins PCIe conector...

I can't afford such an expensive card . The 970 would be twice my monthly income , that is . Some people are more fortunate than others .

Regards,

Indeed . Well , i'd like a Corsair Carbide Air 540 case , too expensive , and a Z77 workstation motherboard , also too expensive . I'd also like a Prologic Commander VX2 carp tent , but i'll never have it .

If i wouldn't be too focused on the 1xxx series I would grab a pair of 970/980

I wonder what happens . Nvidia and ATi ( AMD ) switched series ? I was used to ATI X800 , 850 , 1950 and GeForce 5000 , 6000 , now i see ATI having those numbers and Nvidia leaving the hundreds and heading to thousands . I guess they ran out of ideas .

That could be, but when Nvidia release some new cards I have that feeling that is always better than the RIVAL's Cards :)
