Ok so I have been building my own computers since my first build in 98. I have run into my fair share of issues especially when I used DFI lanparty boards but I have always been able to figure it out. Now im stumped. I upgraded the proc in my server and am using the old i3 3120 to build a server for my dads business. got a h61 micro atx mobo 2x4gb gskill ripjaw ddr3 1600 on newegg 2 months ago. just getting around to the build now. everything seems fine running an old antec neo 500w modular psu. But here is the kicker I had issues getting this to post with the original dvd drive I was using so I used a spare. I put whs11 on it as opposed to server 2012 on it fine. took out the dvd drive as its not needed so there is only 1 thing hooked up. now I have tried to add a second hdd and it wont post. i want to back up the os on a second drive i don't need the space as the primary drive is 6tb. I have since taken every extra drive I have to test. ive tested 7 drives now and I wont post. I disconnect the power to the second drive and it boots fine. all the drives are fully functioning. I am leaning o the psu is in some way bad. I don't know its weird. ive tried every power connector including using Molex to sata power converter no luck in every configuration no post. has anyone ever experienced anything remotely similar. I need some other ideas to test out. ty

The only time i've experienced similar is when the secondary drive is set to Master.

Does it post with no drives attached?

SATA does not have Primary (Master) and Secondary (Slave) like IDE or PATA as it's called now. With IDE if you two drives set to secondary or master on the same cable it would cause problems.

Using an IDE drive as the primary with SATA as secondary can also cause issues, I was already aware about IDE (PATA)

If you are using a SATA drive with an IDE cable of course that can cause issues. The jumper for Primary and Secondary was on the HDD, and if the adapter does not include this then its the adapter at fault.

I guess I should have been more specific as I am in no way using and IDE drive. plus usually even with miss pinned jumpers for a hdd/cdd (cd drive) a coumputer will still post. Haven't owned an ide drive since like 07 :) plus h61 lga1155 mobos I would be surprised if any of them have an ide header.
and jester yes it does post with no drives attached im leaning towards in some way it being a psu issue though in no way is the computer underpowered with a 500w psu

I have a Gigabyte H61 M right in front of me. In my opinon it is a pretty shoddily put together board, though it did come to me second hand.

Both the SATA connections are loose and badly placed for a GPU

The SATA connectors might be loose or worse.

I don't see this, but have you tried a different SATA Cable? Your right they don't have PATA connectors, but it would not have surprised me if it did. I don't remember the model of the mohterboard, but I saw a new one in the last three years that had PATA support.

Tried different cables checked all the ports with the working ssd they all work the cables work. CAPSLOCK do you have the ga-h61m-usb3H ? on mind the 4 sata ports are on the bottom of the board and the board seems solid plus I don't worry about GPU as this is running whs11
unfortunately they way I run cables with cable ties etc on my psu they are a pain to take out of a case to test his psu. my tester says its fine but im leaning that way I think the added draw though minor is trippin the psu its a old psu that ran 24/7 for 5 years before I upgraded my server psu so im getting a corsair cx430 for 30$ from newegg if that doesn't fix it im going to forget it 6tb is plenty for a small business
anyone want an antec neo 500 lol :)

2 SATAs on my one. Its the ds2.

Tbe previos owner of mine should have used 90 degree sata cables because he has pushed the sockets over and they have loosened.
Nothing that a blob of something cant cure.

I cant help you with your issue

I was a bit hasty slagging off Gigabyte, its a small board with a lot of features.
My 2 other Gigabyte boards are faultless

oh yea different setup for sure but free is nice. looks to need a little dusting too :) I find 85-95 psi on the compressor works best :) people tell me its to high well ive never had an issue in 15 years
I don't mind gigabyte I used to be a dfi guy went to asus/asrock for my rigs and gigabyte for budget builds haven't had much issue with them in the past. hope my new psu from the Egg gets here so I can straighten it out.
