Ive been running a "non genuine" (simply because I lost my key on my last format) copy of Windows 7 for a while. I just bought a Win 8.1 key and am about ready to dl the iso.

My question is, am I going to loose all my files? What should I look out for if anything? I'm not sure how the install will go with my Win7 being non genuine.

I believe you can do an in-place upgrade. Do you have a USB/Backup hard drive? (If not...WHY?!?!?! go do that now.. :) )

You can use Windows Easy File Transfer to transfer your profile data over, and it will list programs installed or most of them that it detects.

You can simply copy your Steam directory over to a spare drive or data drive. I run an OS SSD and Data HDD so I never really have to move anything. There are even quite a few games and programs that won't need reinstalled, but many more that will.

You can save your Origin too, at least the download directory...that should save you A LOT of download time.

I recommend after installing the OS and drivers, go to http://www.ninite.com

Install Chrome and Firefox (better to have 3 browsers in-case one gets borked or infected or you need it for something), I recommend running Malwarebytes free, and VLC, etc... but mostly you want to get Classic Shell so you can have a Windows 7-style start menu that is totally free of charge. Everything on Ninite's install page is free, and is installed on the system drive without any extra crap.

Windows 8.1 is an awesome OS that is very solid, fast and easy to work with. All my PC's are on it with a dual boot using Ubuntu 14. Couldn't be happier!

Also if you're into virtualization you now have access to Hyper-V which is much better than the Virtualization solution in Win 7.

Enjoy the upgrade! If you play your cards right, you'll not have to waste too much time reinstalling games, etc. But sometimes a fresh install is the best install too, so all is not lost. :toast:
