I remember when I was a kid I used to work in the computer club. At the time internet was still slow and it was really hard to find an ISP in my town, which offered anything higher than 14.4K dialup with channels busy 99% of the time. So the only type of entertainment we had was either Quake III Arena or Counter Strike.
Another memorable time happened even earlier. Me and my friend had set up a dial-up network with two 14.4K modems (took a lot of time and effort) just so we can play co-op in Heretic!

Steam (It's free, NOT f2p designed)
It's a birds-eye view shooter
There aren't servers hosted anymore because I guess people forgot about this game, but I really wish the development team made more content for this because it really could've been a lot more than what it is. What are you waiting for? Get 3 friends and play it already!! It's F'n FUN and free!!!

I was thinking of Borderlands at the time - forgot GameSpy ended.
At least I didn't say Ten or Heat(wow the days of IPX emulation with a web interface).

I'll add one to the list :

  • Dying Light
  • Four players
  • Supported services : Steam, Tunngle, Hamachi (EVO VPN?)
  • Windows version known to work on : Windows 7 64bit or later
  • The specific type of connection method it supports : LAN, Online LAN, Online
  • The game has campaign co-op and an additional co-op mode which pits you against a human controlled enemy (similar to the game Evolve).

Orcs Must Die 2

Player: Solo or 2 Player co-op campaign, no PvP
Services: Steam, Tunngle (I think)
OS Version: dunno, no GoG version
Connection: no LAN
Gameplay: It's a tower defense game by 3rd person perspective. You place traps and get money by killing orcs to buy more traps. Your hero could use some useful spells and do combat albeit not as effective as the traps. The animation doesn't suck, the traps are quite different from each others (elemental, throw, push, simply damage, slow, AoE, DoT, bomb generator, grinder, archer, guardian, teleport, health/mana fountain, etc), the waves are doable, and you don't rely on much luck like some other tower defense games. Other than campaigns, there's also survival mode. It's pure fun.
Co-op gameplay: More orcs, more hp and different wave timing. Each player is carrying different weapon and native spell but could use the same traps. It's usually better if each player doesn't bring the same traps. Do a teamwork.
It's designed for 2 players in mind, so 2 players kinda a must. Solo is doable but not advised.

DLC: 3. More levels, spells, traps, enemies. If you like the game, buy it all.
Extra:
- There's challenge map (same level with restricted type of traps/weapon) every week. I don't play it anymore, I don't know if it still exists.
- It's advised to macro repeat-hold attack button to your keyboard or mouse. 2 hours of non-stop clicking attack button often hurt. Especially if you're not using crossbow (crossbow needs precision for headshot).

Far Cry 3&4 ( coop though with friend though Steam friends )
Althougth Far Cry 3 does have co-op, I can't really recommend it. It's on rails and there's only a handful of missions. If everyone has Far Cry 3 for the great single-player experience, might as well try co-op but I definitely wouldn't recommend this game if the purpose is strictly co-op.

Payday ( coop 4 ppl )
Payday: The Heist and Payday 2. Payday : The Heist is a straight up shooter. Payday 2 has a lot more value though because it has a lot more heists and ways to play. Beware though: Payday 2 is a lot more frustrating than Payday: The Heist especially when trying to stealth. Someone will always blow it and everyone else will be pissed at him/her. If you have someone in your group that doesn't handle losses well, I'd say it is probably better stick to Payday.

Saints Row ( not sure about the 1st 2 )
Saints Row had two-player co-op but the game only released on the Xbox 360.
Saints Row 2, Saints Row 3, and Saints Row 4 all are available on Windows and all also have two-player co-op. Beware that Saints Row 2 doesn't like Windows NT 6 (Vista and newer) and needs a third party hack to slow the game clock down. Despite that, I still think Saints Row 2 was the best.

Torchlight ( upto 3 at least cooperatively, i believe 4 is max )
Torchlight is not co-op, Torchlight 2 is. On Torchlight 2, it supports up to 6 players at once.

I would add:
Monaco: What's Yours Is Mine -- up to 4 players, 2D robbery game
Farming Simulator 2011, 2013, 15 -- up to 8 players (requires ridiculously fast internet) farming game
Kane & Lynch 1 & 2 -- The second one is worth it just for the facepalming. Don't pay much for them though because they're less than 5 hours each.
Space Engineers -- Requires ridiculously fast internet. Build space stations together!
Minecraft -- Build holes in the ground together!
SimCity -- Build a region together!
ORION: Dino Prelue -- Hunt dinosaurs together!
Terraria -- Kill bosses together!
Sanctum 2 (far more so than Sanctum) -- Shoot baddies and defend your base together!
Test Drive Unlimited 2 -- Cruise together!
Sins of a Solar Empire -- Gang up on unsuspecting AI together!
Supreme Commander (1 & 2) -- See above!
Freelancer -- A classic!
Ace of Spades -- Shoot the enemy, or each other!
Alien Swarm -- Free to play! Survive alien hordes together and for the love of gaming try not to shoot each other!
Borderlands 1 & 2 -- Not at the top of my list but qualifies.
Call of Juarez: The Cartel -- This is a lot like Kane & Lynch in that it is short but it is still a good 3 player co-op game.
Command & Conquer 4: Tiberian Twilight -- Okay, seriously, the only reason why you'd want to play this is to see how far C&C has fallen.
Demigod -- Like DOTA but with less humans and more AI.
EYE: Divine Cybermancy -- A strange game but co-op able.
Fable III -- Two players can make a baby. Need I say more?
Firefall -- Free to play. Just please don't get sucked into its MMOness.
Guns of Icarus Online -- Haven't played this one much to be honest but it is designed to be co-op (a time of 4 versus other teams).
Orcs Must Die 2 -- See post above mine.
Plants vs Zombies: Garden Warfare -- You are a plant and with 3 other plants, you must prevent zombies from eating your garden. 'Nuff said.
Darkspore -- Up to four us's against thems.

That's about all I see worth mentioning in my Steam/Origin library. I obviously excluded the RTS games that have multiplayer that can be played cooperatively.

I also didn't hit on the really old titles like SimCity 2000 Network Edition.

Not that I can think of off the top of my head. I mean it is a Diablo clone. Oh, I guess the Deathspank games have similar mechanics but they aren't co-op.

I would love to have a LAN skyrim game though sooooo baaaad!
Two Worlds II is about the closest there is to that I think but I'm not 100% sure because I never played co-op in it. Single player was similar though.

Torchlight 2 is really at the far end of the "fun rpg" spectrum. The Fate series is probably closest in style. TL and TL2 basically took Diablo and its clones and ilk, and took out all the darker tones, added about 3 times as much loot, threw in fishing and a pet, and went to town. For darker and newer clones, you could try Path of Exile, which is F2P, and the only "Pay" about it that makes it useful is the expanded storage space (I'm a packrat).

Sweet, thanks, gonna sign up and have a go later on this week. It looked awful shiny when I saw it on RPS but back then it was all hearsay and nothing was available.

Killing Floor. It's a players vs Ai monsters in waves and it's jolly fun. Especially since there is no upper player limit. More players just means more monsters. It also has perking, so, for the new players it's super exciting because you're unlocking new weapons and abilites and you have to rely more on teamwork. And each player class has own leveling.

Can't wait for Killing Floor 2. It'll be an instant buy for me when it comes out.

I'm a big fan of Killing Floor, however I'm excessively biased towards it because I've clocked in hundreds of hours. One of the few games where the devs have actively supported and updated it for YEARS after release. Will remain and absolute classic to me and my friends

In reality, the perk level up system is immensely slow, and a key reason why not so many people still play it. Can't wait for KF2, I just hope they tone down the perk level up requirements a bit so people stick around for longer.

Oh, nevermind, I was thinking of Lost Ark for some reason. Graphic styles looked similar. Still looks cool as balls.

Steam says I have over 600 hours on record but I direct launch most of the time lol I was all 360 and COD before my brother showed Vindictus to me. All I had was a drpy laptop with Intel HD at the time... so I built my first pc with a FX6350 :shadedshu: so I learned how to overclock :rockout: then Intel saved me with my next build :clap:Gaming has changed my life so much the past few years. Starting school for CE :) Got those dreams for helping develop the future. AMD's graphene apu that pushes ultra on 4k eyefinity.. maybe if get there

Cheers dunno if it was a plain mistake on Torchlight or this frigging keyboard ( yes yet another going ) anyways edited my post that i was on about TL2 as TL1 is single player ).

Years ago somebody was making a multiplayer mod for TL1, though I never found out if it came to fruition.
But yeah, TL2 has the real coop.
