HP IPIBL-LB (Benicia) mobo only running at 1.1 8x

Hi my wifes computer is a HP a6734f and has a 8800GTS 512.
The pci-e slot is rated x16 but its only running at 1.1 8X
This is really killing the bandwidth.
Anyone know what could be the issue?

It has bios 5.43 and the latest Nvidia drivers, bios set to X16
I tried the gpu-z render test, no changes

GPU-Z includes a render test (not a stress test) to put a small graphics load in order to accurately measure the PCI-Express bus configuration.

it doesn't matter if it is running at x8 its not hurting the performance
a 8800GTS is positively Ancient
old system is old any performace issues you are having are related to the age of the hardware not the link-speed of the PCIe slot

It would probably run better in a better Motherboard too, those Pegatron boards aren't the best.

You can try reseating the card, sometimes one of the pins won't make good contact and it will drop down x8. It only takes on pin no making contact to drop the card from x16 to x8. It could also be the card dying causing the issue as well. If you are having nVidia related BSODs then the card could be unstable. If the card is unstable the handshake with the motherboard to determine PCI-E link with might not be completely successfully, so it is dropping back to x8.

But as Onemoar said, running an 8800GTS at 1.1x8 is not going to affect its performance. If running a GTX480 @ 1.1x8 only lowers the GTX480s performance by 10%, then it will have no affect on a 8800GTS. The 8800GTS uses way less PCI-E bandwidth than the GTX480 because the performance is so much lower.

The only time the number of lanes should change is with modern AMD cards, when they basically de-activate the second card. This causes the lane count to drop. The normal PCI-E power saving only lowers the PCI-E version from 3.0 or 2.0 to 1.1.

So any time you see a single x16 card running at less than x16 there usually is a problem.

Turns out it was the video card on its last leg.
It just died suddenly, took a heat gun to the gpu and it lived another 2 months then died again.
Got another 8800 640MB and it reports 16x, 6800 also reported 16x
