Elder Scrolls Online Ditches Subscription

Indeed, the online variant of the Elder Scrolls saga is scrapping the monthly subscription. It will be called Elder Scrolls Online: Tamriel Unlimited and it will go live March 17th.

how do you guys think it compares to neverwinter? I could never get into ddo but neverwinter has more simplicity and plenty of action to go with it. of course thats why my father loves ddo.. seriously complex and a massive world.

I'm far from an expert on Neverwinter having only played for it for a couple hours, but I see some similarities. You pick out a handful of skills to use at a time, have cursor-targeting, as well as some 'action moves' like rolling out of the way. ESO is pretty easy to just pick up and just play, especially if you've every played an Elder Scrolls game. You'll know the terminology and some of the lore.

It also has pretty good PvP if you're into domination/control style play as most of it consists of protecting or attacking keeps. Last time I played a full Cyrodiil map (PvP) was approximately 600v600v600.

Farming is actually ok in an MMORPG -, particularly when it includes killing monsters that actually reward decent experience - like old school MMOs did!

ESO has better visuals/graphics than Neverwinter.
Combat is similar between the two, though with their own inherent differences
Viewpoint : ESO has first and third viewing, Neverwinter is third person only
Neverwinter feels very F2P, very 'fluff and shop'
Neverwinter is completely free, ESO will still require a game purchase like GW2.


Still have my eye on the next MMO, but it feels very bland in the market at the moment.

At least we can rely on the old trusty list :

Classic MMOs : Project 99 EverQuest/Final Fantasy XI/Istaria/Vanguard
Modern MMOs in the vein of Warcraft : Rift/Tera/GW2 take your pick
Modern MMOs that say 'fu** you Elves' : Fallen Earth/The Secret World

You really don't need anything else.

I'd like to think not. It's been out long enough that it should have been discounted appropriately.

Well, you can get the base game + DLC + 30 days to tide your over until the subscriptions dies out for ~£20. Not bad, kinda like Guild Wars I guess.
Only played closed Beta, so I don't know if it's any good or not.

Same, but when I realized that by the end of the first week, people were already level 50 and at 'end game,' it just took the wind out of my sails. It's not that I want to or care to keep pace with the other players - in fact I respect a game that doesn't force pace on players. It's just the reality that the journey there isn't as great as they made it out to be, because the game play is ruined by so many fundamental flaws. The biggest one for me is that mobs do not give any sufficient amount of experience when slain, so there's no incentive to go out into the world and simply fight/practice.

Most of my friends and I have agreed that if we want real TES, we'll play TES. And if we want a fun online game, there's plenty out there that do it better and all the while we don't get frustrated by how much of a let down ESO turned out to be.
