Issue with ping spikes

Not sure if this is the right spot to put this, if not im very sorry.

Lately I've been receiving high ping spikes that only last a second or two every couple seconds, anywhere from 5 to 20 seconds apart. Pinging google.com from cmd gave me the information that I would spike anywhere from 400 to 2000 ms. After pinging my own modem I got the exact same results leading me to believe its internal. is there anyway to fix this without having to call my ISP, Rogers?

please describe your network layout, including other devices on the network and how they're connected.

at a wild guess, somethings choking on the network - your wifi link to the router, or someone else uploading/downloading briefly getting priority over you.

Currently its just my own laptop connected to the network, with two routers throughout my house. nothing else is connected to my network at the moment so there should be no priority issues.

connect something wired to either router (test both if you can) and do a file transfer. see if the ping spikes get worse.

if you're wifi bridging/repeating, those tend to cause issues like this if the signal isnt perfect.

ping spikes are still constant and remain unchanged during the file transfer.

That indicates local bandwidth isnt the issue, which means the cause is on your PC, or the router.

You're connected over wifi? what wifi type and connection speed? What wifi card is in your laptop, and what operating system are you running? Does the same issue happen when connected wired?

Problem happens over wifi and wired. I'm running windows 8.1, but the problem still occurs on my old windows 7 laptop. connection speed is 54mbps and type is 802.11g I believe

you mentioned two routers. have you tested connected directly to the first one, or only to the second? how is the second connected to the first one?

both are connected directly into wall outlets and yes, Ive tested with both and gotten the same results

try with another PC then, as it almost sounds like that laptop is the cause. you've ruled out router, bandwidth and connection type - the only common factor is the laptop itself.

This laptop has no issues on any other network as well as the same issue persists on any other device computer I have.

what things are in common then, that you havent ruled out. you've skipped a bunch of my questions which makes this hard.

You've ruled out:

Routers.
Wired.
Wireless.
Local bandwidth.
External connections.
wired/wireless devices.

there has to be something in common causing this.

all I can think of is my modem having an issue replying because its receives everything, just takes time to reply

Try unplugging one of your routers and see if you still have the same problem.

Then try just the other one if you still have the problem.

No difference, unplugging either one or both has no effect. spikes still remain.

what routers u got, and what cat cables are u using?

also have u tried newer and older drivers for your ethernet nics? plus what nics are u using?
