What antivirus do you use?

Antivirus doesn't affect framerate. It may affect level loading times, but not framerate itself. Not even when data has to be streamed during gameplay (from HDD to memory). AV's usually don't even scan game data files.

They can if they consume lots of CPU clocks forcing the game to compete with the antivirus for CPU time. Antiviruses scan all executables on the system (including game executables) and some can potentially scan dynamically linked libraries too.

playing without running anything on second screen gives me lag free like I stated above. When I play in 32 people server, cpu usage is not constant 100%, its average about 80%, no lag when I run something on second monitor and playing at the same time. 50 or 64 players server, constant 100% cpu usage, nothing can be run on second monitor if I don't want lag gameplay. Its the cpu. thinking about 3770k. I got a deal on amazon on 4770k for $250 but I was not at home. when I got home, someone who was faster than me took my deal away. the 3770k is about the same price on ebay and amazon right now, but the 4770k I have to change the mobo also.

The 3770k is just fine. If you can get it then go for it.

Many people have already told you that the performance obtained by changing CPUs won't justify the price. You likely won't notice a difference either.

You are still talking about this upgrade. So that means you are purposely ignoring our advice. The last 7 days has been a waste because you have no intention of listening. In the end you will do whatever you want anyways.

You will be back in a few weeks saying "I upgrade to the 3770k and still get 100% usage. HELP!".

I almost died laughing at this. Reading back at everyone saying "it won't change anything" made me laugh even harder.

The difference between his old CPU @ 4.5GHz to his new CPU at stock wouldn't add performance.

Most likely the processor change caused something on the software level (registry or a driver) to update and thus fix his problem. Or he had a seriously faulty 2500k, sometimes if you overclock too far the performance can degrade because its unstable.

Either way we all told him not to upgrade, and he did. So he doesn't respect our advice. But I'm glad it all worked out.

tbh, I'm going to go with the "unstable overclock" theory.

It doesn't really make sense that this fixed it... but it did apparently. The symptoms were pointing towards CPU but it doesn't add up that that would be an issue. So something was up with his old chip if I'm being honest with myself. That's what I'm betting. Maybe he even overclocked it too much and damaged it so even stock sucked, it can happen. Dunno.

there's nothing wrong with my i5 2500k. I reinstalled window 2 times when I felt 100% cpu usage due to software, but it is still 100%. It can rush anything I threw at it,but when BF4 and do something at the same time is impossible for the i5. Did you google to see how many i5 has 100% cpu usage during bf4. Only 1 3770k has 100% cpu usage. 2 guys in my friend list has 3670k,2500k and they have 100% usage too. It is the i5. It can't handle BF4 and something else at the same time well.

My old, old, old CPU. I believe it was a Athlon 64 xxxx+. I forget the exact model. But if I took the overclock too far it would pass the stability tests and appear stable, but when I benched it the score would be lower and general performance would be worse. Luckily I didn't do any permanent damage to my CPU and lowering the overclock slightly solved it. I believe this had happened to you.

Don't want to argue too much coz its childish, but the 2500k gives me the same score on 3dmark 11, 3dmark 06, bf3, bf4 since I purchased the 2500k 3 years ago. I don't have lag at all with BF4 now with that 2500k. The problem is just 100% cpu usage in that game, I think BF3 the Oman map has the same 100% usage issue, so I can't run anything else when that game is running. If you want to prove reader of this thread, post a i5 video running bf4 to see if it has 100% cpu usage or not. I heard from 1 guy an hour ago, his 4670k 4.4ghz hits 100% usage too. Peace out!

the 2500k is a long way from the ability of newer i5's. for a game threaded like bf4 and trying to watch movies at the same time a fx8350 would do better than a 2500k.
hyper threading and more cores seems a bit under rated since it is 2015 and there is even cell phones with 8 cores. even talk about if hyper threading does anything for gamers when that is how a G becomes a i3. not all about single core performance anymore especially with multiple monitors.
it is really no wonder a 3770k is doing better when it actually has the balls for what is being asked of it.

I feel the OP got some misguided advice from people that said not to upgrade. I had pointed out that performance-wise it would only be about a 10% increase in performance going from 2500k to 3770k. But, this was about all the other things he wanted to do while playing BF4, so it'snot a performance issue, it's a thread issue. 2500k has 4 threads. 3770K has 8 threads. He's getting what he hoped for because of the additional thread cpability. As @xfia points out, the benefits of hyperthreading seem to be underrated here on TPU. It may not help much in gaming (yet), but it surely helps do other things WHILE gaming.

He was only watching a few movies and playing a few songs on the other screen. These are normal everyday tasks. It's not like he was doing anything remotely intensive like 3D rendering or encoding.

bf4 can scale to 8 threads!
playing one of the most heavily threaded games ever made and watching a movie is not intensiveo_O
haswell i5's pack a bigger punch than previous generations and closed the gap on the ability of fx cpu's in threaded apps
the game was just already hitting all 4 cores with almost no headroom to speak of

Indeed. In October of 2013 Dent1 referred to BF4 as not the only multithreaded game out there, thus saying it is multithreaded*. So yeah, if you are doing more than just playing the game (and honestly, I prefer to be IMMERSED in a game, not doing other things), then definately you need more than 4 threads.

*I actually only searched for posts on here about BF4 being multithreaded, and his post was on the first page of results. Thought it was kind of a funny coincidence, actually.

He was only watching a few movies and playing a few songs on the other screen. These are normal everyday tasks. It's not like he was doing anything remotely intensive like 3D rendering or encoding.

When I play League of Legend, 2500k usage max out around 50% and I can do anything on the second screen without losing performance in game; however, like you saw on the video, Running BF4 alone pushes the cpu usage to 100%. Even watching movie or listening to music is not heavy task, but there's no more room for the cpu to process, so the performance in game must suffer the lack of cpu power. That why I can't stream to twitch using OBS while BF4. It has a terrible lag even OBS uses like 5-7% cpu usage of the 2500k.

yes I never get close to 100 fps on ultra too.

ultra: this is when I played on an old monitor

Here's the answer to all this.

When Lowering settings, the CPU gets more solicited. This is normal. The more FPS you have, the more CPU it will need.. why? cause the CPU needs to feed the GPU. So you 2500k while multi-tasking would show it's limit I guess. (like when they were doing benchmark before, lower resolution with low details, some CPU go to 300fps on some, and when you get slower CPU, it was like 180-200, etc..)

I played BF4 on a 2500k + HD7950, never had any CPU problem at 100% while playing on ultra. I am quite sure this could be the cause.

P.S. BF4, as long as it has 4 thread is ok. http://www.techspot.com/review/734-battlefield-4-benchmarks/page6.html

But like I said, lowering the details, might cause CPU usage. One of the main reason why when playing in eyefinity or surround, you don't need a 5930k @ 5ghz to get 50fps.. so adding more thread while he is doing multi-task could help alot.
